Confused and want to leave my job!

I am currently a customer service duty manager for airline, just recently transfered to STT for a promotion here. I make good money, but ever since I've been working here, I have only thought of flying, I truly hate my job, and I'm sick of dealing with rude passengers and disrespecful young employees.

I've wanted to fly ever since I was a kid, never follow thru with it. My question to you Is, even with all of the crisis at the airlines now days, would you leave aviation? Would you take a paycut for something that will make you happy? and final and most importantly, what would you do If you were in my shoes? Follow my heart? Keep this job that I hate?

Id stay at your job for now. It hard enough to get a job anywhere right now, keep the one you have and start flying if you really want to. Money isn't everything, and definitely being happy with what you do is important. Would i take a pay cut to do what makes me happy..yes. That's what counts in my opinion. Stick it out and hang in there for now, and start flying when you feel the time is right.

If you want to fly, certainly fly HOWEVER, it's probably a better idea to make a career change from a position of strength rather than poverty.

Hating your job is one thing, but you're certainly going to hate being broke far more.

I would reiterate the above.

Dreams don't pay the house note, neither does liking your job. If you really want to do this crap, save up and pray to God in the meantime you find a good paying job which allows you to buy your own small aircraft or entry into a club.

I hate to go all "Jeff Spicoli" on you, but awesome.. totally awesome! :)

Find another job, THEN quit the job you have. Just get your rear in gear and get those resumes/applications out. You won't find a new job by wishing for one. Plus, you'll start to feel better knowing there is hope on the horizon.

Word of warning: Take note of your feelings about your job now. I know you want to fly, but if you choose the airlines expect much of the same. A big part of what we do is handle customer service issues, which is something they never tell you. That's typically the difference maker for people who like the airlines versus those who don't. Oh, and if you go the airline route, apparently you need to like hats, too. :)

So you work in aviation now, and your miserable, yet you think that another aviation job will make you happy? If I may say so, your problem is not your job, it's your attitude. Your job is whatever you choose to make it. You go in with a crappy attitude, then it's going to be a crappy job.

That said, I left professional aviation for a job I had never even imagioned before it came up. I make more money, have more time off, and a better quality of life than I ever did with the airlines. My point is, allow yourself to consider something besides aviation as a means of making a living. You might be surprised with what you find.

You don't have to WORK in aviation to be involved with it. Earn a private pilot license. Join a flying club or the local EAA chapter. Volunteer for aviation related activities.

I think you have already answered your question. You said your are sick of rude passengers and disrespectful employees and being a pilot would eliminate one or all of these? Perhaps doing a career exploration survey would serve you better.

NW004,

It's time to set a plan of action and set some goals for those things you want to do. If flying it is ,then check to see how you can get your license to do private flying. I'd suggest making a list of things you want to accomplish first, but I would also tell you to consider other things outside of flying (just in case there are other things you're interested in), but if flying is your dream, set goals that get you on track to do everything you can to obtain it. I believe you can follow your heart and be successful, but be wise. Create a plan of action that would get you where you want to be. That's exactly what i did and I'm doing what I love.

Thanks,

Wes

Maybe I'm just feeling like an arse tonight, but I just don't get threads like this -- why make a post asking, "is this right for me"?

Nobody knows the right answer except you. In order to make that decision, you need to know where it is you want to go, and go do some research to find out what it's like. Invest a little time, there is PLENTY of research fodder on this very site on the subject, digest what you've read (ask some questions about what you've read if need be), then sit down and do some critical thinking for yourself. After all, it's just your life, and ONLY YOU know what's right for YOU.

Personally, I'd rather read a post that says, "I'm a CSR and I am leaning toward becoming a professional pilot. Here are the pros and cons I've been thinking over -- is there anything I'm missing?"

So...now that that is out of the way, I'll simply agree with what's all ready been said: the flying business is one that has many hard living years at the beginning, with oddball schedules and low pay. If your lifestyle can handle that in the name of following your dream, then go for it. If your lifestyle can't handle it, then don't do it...and for the love of God, PLEASE don't change careers just hoping it'll get better, and then be one of the people griping about how much you hate it in 3-4 years and posting on JC about your next career change....followed by the announcement of your recall....etc.
