My Flight Surgeon

Sr. Aviation Medical Examiner
In April the FAA announced 11 conditions for which the AME may issue a medical certificate if certain conditiions have been met. Many of these conditions previously required a Special Issuance medical certificate. The conditions are:
Arthritis
Asthma
Chronic Hepatitis C
Glaucoma
Chronic migraine headaches
Hypertension
Hypothyroidism
Pre=diabetes (metabolic syndrome / insulin resistance)
Prostate cancer
Renal cancer
Testicular cancer

Later this year, they will be adding:
Kidney stones
Carotid artery stenosis
Colitis
Iritable bowel syndrome
Colon cancer
Bladder cancer
Leukemia
Hodgkin's disease
Lymphoma

There are specific guidelines that must be met for the AME to issue the medical certificate. All of these conditions will require a "status report" written within 90 days prior to the date of the medical examination. If the requirements are met for particular condition, the AME may issue a medical certificate without a Speical Issuance.

Applicants for first- or second- class must provide this information annually; applicants for third-class must provide the information with each required exam.

This is going to make it easier for pilots to get a medical when they have one of these conditions.

I will be posting the requirements for each condition over the next several weeks.
