Commuting Out of BNA

So far I haven't had to commute since I moved in base for the pt135 company I've been working for. Now that I want to move on to a regional, it looks like I will have to start commuting. I'm planning on moving back to Nashville and commuting from there and was wondering if anyone had any insights on how east the commute is out of BNA to places like MSP, DTW and the New York area. I'm smart enough not to commute to ATL and I have a friend who has told me about how hard it's been commuting to Chicago. Any other Nashville commuters out there that can shed some light?

It would make my life a lot easier of PSA would just go ahead and announce BNA as a crew base! I applied, but have to take the dang CTP course in July, and was told I wouldn't interview until after passing the written...so I guess Im just in a "holding pattern" until then lol..I def don't like the idea of commuting, esp since everyone says its a PITA now that most all the planes are full of paying customers. I was planning on making the 5hr drive to TYS each time vs commuting to CLT from BNA or MEM. Both of those are 2hr drives for me, plus the flight. If I could find any other gig that would allow me to get multi time, AND count my helo time, Id probably jump on it. Just not much around where I live that will do that. I want to end up at NetJets or the likes, but figure a regional is the quickest and best way to get my time up where I qualify for those jobs.

DTW and MSP not bad. I have no idea about NY.
As for BNA being a crew base... maybe, but I doubt it. Not my company but I think that is wishful thinking. Of course I have been wrong before. I thought I was wrong about something but I was right. So I was wrong about being wrong.

Have you looked at airlines that pay for your ATP training?

I would have thought the same thing, but when I interviewed back in March, one of the chief pilots told me BNA was in the "final 3" and they would be announcing in Aug the decision. The new MX base there as well as starting overnights in Nashville has me hopeful. Plus, the CP I talked with said he would probably have to move to the new base and he loves Nashville. Take it for what it's worth. Sure would be nice though!

I have, but PSA has a base in TYS that I can drive to in about 4.5hrs vs having to commute with some other airline. With the nearest airport served by 121 being 2hrs away, the drive to TYS is probably the same, if not shorter than flying to work elsewhere.

If PSA opened BNA would they still keep TYS?

Yes. TYS supports the route structure very well out of CLT, DCA, and PHL.

BNA would most likely be used for the "new" system which still might include some flying through the USAir hubs but also through some AA hubs like ORD, LGA/JFK. Just because they are close in proximity doesn't mean they don't both work as outstation bases.

I'm at Airways so that would be backwards progression but the fact that all flights out of TYS are 50 seat RJ's makes it more difficult. Just hoping they don't do the same with BNA. I honestly can't wait to see the death of the 50 seat RJ and will be very happy if one day mainline has all the flying back. Hopefully the current RJ pilot shortage helps make that a reality.

BNA to DTW isn't too bad actually. Just have to watch out for some questionable folks snagging the jumpseat before you. Best of luck to you if you just so happen to beat out one douchebag. Of course if you end up going to a company that doesn't have a DTW base, then disregard all - or if you do go to a company with a DTW base and you end up based elsewhere, disregard all.

Goodbye, 50 seat RJ. Hello, Part 135 Turboprop!

Good for you man. Glad people are leaving. The only thing the RJ operators have left to temp people are crummy flow agreements and bonuses. Seems like most see through the BS.
Nah man, I was being sarcastic about what would replace the RJ ;)

The RJ is an airplane. No different from any other. As it is phased out some communities (and commuters), may find themselves out of luck.
