Commuting...How hard?

I do JFK-MCO. Everyone thinks ohhh my goshhhh:panic::panic::panic:. It is one of the easier commutes out there. Yes even in the summer/spring break/holiday season. I actually really don't mind commuting. From Orlando to the NYC area there are easily over 30 flights a day. Being based at home is great, I was. The company closed my base but things happen and you gotta move on. I love living in Orlando and won't move. A base can open and close real easy, so be careful about moving to your job.

That is decidedly not a pilot's shoe. And you KNOW we have a few attractive female pilots. They may have crappy personalities, but rumor has it (ok, you told me) they are freaks in bed. (speaking of that, did you ever call her?)

And I don't really know what all the FAs feet look like. It's all about the ankles though. All of our FAs weight too much to have ankles like that. (And before Amber or one of the Cougars yells at me, I'm kidding... sort off).

Hey, you forgot about Kristen.. What? You don't mind HER "yelling" at you? :p I'm not sure who you fly for, ExpressJet, perhaps, but my new gig has some pretty nice ankles floatin' around. ;) Unfortunately, we can't wear shoes like in Matt's avatar. It's against uniform regs, ya know. :D

Commuting isnt hard. In my 2+ years at my airline, I have only used my call-in-honest policy once. IT JUST SUCKS!! i hate it. Its better to work for a crappier airline where u live than to commute for a slightly better one.

jtrain, y dont you bid for LAX or ONT? even IAH or SAN would be easier, wouldnt it?

You know it's funny, 'cause everybody says that with the implication that I'm in Newark because I WANT to be. I can hold a relief line in Cleveland and long call in LAX (which means I can sit long call in Salt Lake with it being a 12 hour call out). I'm in Newark because this is where they put me after training and we haven't had a system bid (where we can move bases) since I got outta training. There was going to be one, but it canceled. I've got guys junior to me in LAX, ONT, IAH and maybe even SAT, but I can't move there until the company runs the system bid. And if there are no vacancies? Well, I'll be hangin' in Newark.

Such is the game.

Ya know, I'm actually pondering intentionally going from being based where I live to commuting b/c my wife and I miss Orlando so much. Really, the only thing stopping us right now is $$$. Not worried about the house, since I could a) turn it into a crashpad (it's 10 minutes from the airport) or b) rent it out to my brother and his girlfriend. We just don't have the $$$ to get a house in Orlando yet, and I would go nuts moving back into an apartment. The way things are going, I could probably hold a line in DTW as a CA by mid-summer, and I'm a hair away from actually holding ATL CA of all things.

A member of my immediate family commutes from BGR to EWR. Hes been doing it for several years.

You know I just realized something....

When I was based in BHB I was once non reving home out of BGR because all the BHB flights were full. BGR was a mess as well. I managed to get the jumpseat on an air whisky flight to LGA. After I checked in a continental captain walked up to the gate and tried to get on. He spoke to me and told me he was headed to EWR but missed the expressjet flight. We both ended up getting on that same flight and I talked to him while walking to the aircraft. Now that I think about it, he may have been your father.

I met a pinnacle FO who lives in Orlando and commutes to DTW. I actually ran into him twice, once in LGA and the other time in DTW. Nice guy too.
Sure beats living in DTW.

You ever make it back down here, first round is on me MOFO!

There are probably 15 CAL guys that commute out of BGR. I just flew out on the 29th, There were 2 pilots and a FA commuting on my flight. I don't remember him mentioning going to LGA, but its a possibility. Somehow I managed to get on a BGR-EWR flight with seats to spare. EWR-TPA was a different story.

If you do option A, please let me know. There is a good chance I'll be commuting to MEM. I'll know more in the next few weeks.

Commuting to EWR, JFK, or LGA is in a class of its own...especially on RJ's.

mxflyer,

I have just started commuting about 18 months ago. Here are my tips:

If you do have a union (BTW, I could care less if you are or aren't union, if you are approved you are welcome on my jumpseat) you should have a jumpseat committee that can give you the scoop on commuting, for example, they can tell you who you have agreements with. There may or may not be other SLC-ATL commuters where you live, ask around until you find some and see how they do it.

A good website for commuters is www.nonrev.net It will have a "tools" tab, click on that and it will have city pairs and dates. I use this religiously. It will list direct flights first and then flights that contain stops. Airline websites are another good tool, especially since you can check seats and gauge your chances of making a particular flight. One caveat, I think I have seen airline sites omit flights that are full, which doesn't mean the jumpseat is taken.

Parking. You may or may not be able to get employee parking at SLC. I can not at ATL, so the best I can do is park commercially at a discount, I use Parking Spot. Its about 5 bucks a day. Other options include finding a hotel that has a shuttle to the airport and asking (some might suggest just parking and hopping on, but that could be risky, you could get towed) maybe the driver or a concierge if you could strike a parking deal. Ask if you can pay 40 or 50 bucks a month and ride their shuttle, it will save a bundle over years of commuting. I don't know if SLC has public transport to the airport but you could look into that as well.

Lastly, you are about to embark on a great commuting adventure. I wouldn't encourage it for the faint of heart of those short on patience. When you miss that last flight to SLC and have to either sleep in the crew lounge/terminal/or hotel room (assuming you can afford it), you have to tell yourself, "this too will pass". It is a personal decision that all airline flight crew have to make, for some the answer is "I wouldn't commute, EVER", and that is fine. Some do it for a while and stop, others do it to upgrade until they can hold their base, etc. Others start out at bases and then decide to move and commute. My airline has about 40-50% commuters. In a strange way, though commuting is a pain, it is almost a benefit of the airline lifestyle. Attitude is everything. You get to live where you want. It sounds like you love Salt Lake, great for you. Just understand that you will pay a price and approach it that way. I have, when all is said and done, a fairly easy commute, yet even for me it wears on me; however, when I pull into my driveway coming home from a trip its worth it. I also pay a price in not being able to make as much money, but again, thats ok.

At any rate, I wish you luck. If you have any questions I will try to answer them the best that I can.

It was said in jest. In all seriousness, I only take people who I find attractive in my jumpseat. If you are an fugly mofo, then I'm sorry. There should be another flight around shortly. You should realize that being ugly brings down the average attractivness of pilots everywhere, and is a detriment to our continuous pursuit of poonanny. I happen to have a particular affinity for feet, which is clearly evident from my avatar. She happens to be a regular commuter, and is always welcome on my jumpseat.

We will not be able to make advances in a pilot's ability to accomplish horizontal (or whatever direction you so choose) fitness unless we take a stand. I encourage you to join me in my decision to ban ugly pilots from the jumpseat.

Really??? :whatever:

If you 're not sure about moving to Atlanta from the other side of the country, I would say to you DONT MOVE TO ATLANTA, or at least south Atlanta.

Reasons:
#1 April 2007; Day before training starts, my car gets stolen from the hotel parking lot across from DAL world headquarters. I had just moved from Daytona, and didnt really have time to unpack, so along with the car, approximately all of 40% of what I owned was stolen as well, save the logbook, laptop and the clothes I had on me. I filed a police report and asked the officer what the chances are of recovering my car were; he responded by telling me his first advice was to go to autotrader.com. I then get a call 2 months later saying that my car was located in a wrecker lot, and it had been towed from a bad area of downtown only 3 days after it was reported stolen. It still had my liscense plate and everything except all the belongings were gone. Great job towing company on taking there sweet arse time to let me know my car was recovered. And they still wanted an $80 fee just to look at the car!

#2 April 2007; our NH class was quartered at the Westin equipped with a 24 hour guard on a gated parking lot that we had to pay to park there during training; Seems nice and secure but not so, one of my buddies had about $200 worth of stuff taken from his truck.

#3 December 2007;An intern living at our crashpad also has his truck stolen from a parking right next door to Flight Safety

#4 May 2007; Two interns walking out of their apartment in East Point are robbed at gunpoint

So much for "Southern Hospitality"
These are the primary reasons I am much more comfortable with the 2300 mile commute from SFO.

You mean south airport area ATL. Northside is nice, especially around Buckhead, party til the break of dawn. Anywhere near the airport is no bueno amigo.

Amen to that! I had some family that lived in ATL and we used to visit once a year. College Park which is right beside the airport is like Ghettoville USA!
