commuting from Hawaii

A buddy of mine who lives in Hawaii who's not a JCer is looking to get on with a regional.
I told him he'd surely have to relocate or at least have a crash pad, even if based somewhere west, but he's wondering if anyone commutes from Honolulu and if it's even feasible.

I used to commute from Seattle to a regional IN Honolulu. It's feasible but with regional schedules you need a place to stay. Could initially be gone from home quite a bit, but long-term it would be OK. Not optimal as a career or anything but as a stepping stone to get to a further career goal, sure.

My brother did it for a while. He got use to riding UPS and FedEx.
Finally got too exhausting for him and he moved to the mainland.

yeah? that's true, the cargo carriers open up a few more chances for rides.
I think he's looking at Compass for LAX and Horizon for SEA or PDX hopefully or Mesa for PHX.

I did it to Honolulu as well. Not to bad but it is nice to have a crash pad to get to a day before when the airplanes are full during school breaks.

Someone in my class at XJT commutes from Hawaii. No idea why he decided the wanted to work out of IAD.

The difficult thing about using cargo carriers for the commute is vehicle parking in HNL. Can't really park over by fedex/UPS for any length of time so you'll have to take a taxi from the employee parking near the terminal unless you have someone to drop you off and pick you up every time.

Damn. I wonder how loads are. I hope to go to HI this summer. High school doing the whole 50 in the 50th thing.

The two times I looked I would have ended up in the jumpseat. That said, a friend was able to buy a last minute upgrade (on a revenue ticket) going east bound in December. Who knows.

If LAX based, it would be a pretty easy commute. However that is a very fatiguing ride...your friend would essentially be going to work already tired before even working a trip.

lyft or uberx. half the rate of a taxi, and way more convenient since you can hail it with your phone.
