Commuting experiences

Looking for experiences/advice on commuting to work to/from another state, everyone is different so it helps seeing different stories. Information that would be helpful; traveling during the different seasons, how long do you stay away from home, how often do you work, family life, living arrangements at work base, costs, pros and cons. I am currently dispatching at a regional and it’s hard waiting on the majors to open up and hoping to get in where you live. Wondering if commuting is normal and strongly considered.

It depends where you are located. I was at SkyWest in St. George, UT with a regional airport with only our small planes. To get back to DFW I would normally have to fly to SLC or DEN and transfer to a mainline aircraft. During the summer, it became tricky because flights would get full. Because some aircraft changes which resulted in fewer seats, I started to drive to Vegas because there were more options. I normally stayed 2 weeks then go home. Try and swap you shifts to extend your weekend. I was burned out at the end of my time at SkyWest and glad I got back to the DFW area. Good luck.

Did you jump from SkyWest to a mainline? And if so, how long were you there for?
