Commuters: TSA Liquid Ban Question

I know when in uniform we're exempt from the TSA liquid ban, but what if we're travelling and not in uniform? Do we have to comply with the 3:1:1 rule?

Reason I'm asking is the loads are so insane out of CLT this weekend so I'm driving to ATL to fly to PHX. Normally I'd just J/S, but my wife is going with me. I'd like to avoid having to wear my uniform during the 4 hour drive in the middle of the night to catch a 5am flight. I'd like to avoid checking our bags as well.

The 311 rules applies to anyone not in uniform. Even if you have a crew badge.

My wife and I just flew to Michigan and we checked most of our stuff just so we wouldn't have to deal with it. However I did place some basic toiletries in a baggie just in case. It happened to be the larger ziploc freezer baggie and not the 1qt. baggie. TSA was nice enough about it... They had a spare 1qt. baggie and gave it to me to use.

Another alternative... and many folks I know do it... is just wear your uniform until past security... then change. In your case... just put the uniform one before going through security so you don't have to wear it all night on the drive. Then... take it off once you are though.

Hmm, I know of people who have gone through crew line out of uniform and not had a problem...

Oh I can still hit the crew line without being in uniform... as long as I have my badge... but I'll still be subjected to the 311 rule... whereas the crewmember commuting in uniform ahead of me won't.

Do NOT plan on that.

All you'd be doing is setting yourself up for a 'monday morning suprise' when your toiletries get dumped in the garbage and you have no recourse.

Correct, some will and some wont. Unless you know for sure, wear the uniform or check your bags. one of the airports I commute out of, i was out of uniform, when my bags went thru, the screener looked up from her xray machine, and i just waved and dangled my ID. and it was fine. But I have heard stories from others in my crashpad that were unsuccessful.

Thanks for the replies. It's iffy for us to make it on and I don't really want our bags to go to Phoenix without us. Uniform it is.

:yeahthat: It's a real PITA but that's what I do too. It's completely ridiculous but I play the game.

At which point, if the toiletries did contain liquid explosives, they would detonate due to the shock of being dropped and everyone at the checkpoint would be injured or dead. Of course the likelyhood of the liquid explosives having made it that far without exploding is basically nil, but who's counting. Obviously not the TSA.

As with a lot of TSA mandates, this is highly dependent on the management of the TSA at your airport. I'm not sure what it proves to have the white shirt and wings on, though. I think it is just so passengers don't ask a question about why I can go through with my big gulp. :)

A while ago I saw TSA conducting random checks at the gate, pulling aside passengers and hand searching carryon luggage. Anyone know if they are still doing that?

I've just kept my uniform on if I was going to carry something. As annoying as the rules are, I don't think it's that much added hassle to play by them if you're going to have to wear it through security anyway.

You guys would like the Alaska bush TSA better ;)
