Here is Sec. 61.129 (4) of the FARs:

10 hours of solo flight in a single-engine airplane on the areas of
operation listed in Sec. 61.127(b)(1) of this part, which includes at least--
(i) One cross-country flight of not less than 300 nautical miles.....blah blah blah; and
(ii) 5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an
operating control tower.

My question concerns part (ii), specifically the bit about each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that if you arrived at the airport and flew straight-in then it doesn't count? Must you have remained in the pattern (e.g. taken off, flown a circuit in the pattern, then landed) ?

If you flew a staright in for a runway, then you had to be on final at some point, right? Is final one of the legs of a traffic pattern? It is my FAR/AIM so I would consider that to be a flight involving a traffic pattern. If you are worried, just do 11 takeoffs and landings in that case.
 
I'd have to agree with that. So the "each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern" stipulation seems a little bit redundant doesn't it?
 
It's kinda like the whole 'intercepting and tracking courses by use of navigation equipment' for instrument currency... doesn't even need to be said.

I believe that is to prevent you from counting the bounces as you go down the runway. In a 152, for example, you could easily make 3, 4 or even 5 legitimate take-offs and landings during one run down the length of the long runway at MSP (I landed there once in a 172, at midnight . . . it is huge!!).

I don't know that for sure, though.

seems like a good idea...but it would be pushing my limits a bit....probably not the safest idea.
