Commercial Insurance Costs?

This question is for those that provide instruction in their own plane. What would you say is the "average" cost for commercial insurance on the plane. This would be for a -172 or Cherokee (nothing complex) and for a CFII/MEI. Just really looking for ballpark figures...

As a general rule of thumb, take your regular premium and multiply it by 3 or 4 times to estimate what a commercial policy would cost.

When I looked in to it for my plane the premium went from $1100/year to $4700/year.

Sounds about right x4. Complex, HP, and TW could cause some serious "stickashock" and hyperventilation. Really got to have a bunch of students to make it work... at 4K/150 hours/ Year your hourly ins. coverage alone is at 26/hour. Add all the other stuff and you are quickly non competitive by just making ends meet.

Dual only I paid $1700 for a TW this year. For solo pilots it would have kicked up to about $8500.

Holy crap!!! I know TWs have higher incidents of landing mishaps, but that is crazy!!! I need to fly out there one of these days, buy you lunch and pick your brain. Don't worry, I'm not looking at starting any biz around Texas!!! :)

Shoot, maybe do a little acro fun too!

Even if you start a business in El Paso I don't mind giving someone a piece of my mind... wait... that's not what you said.
As for as an excuse for doing some acro... I really need an excuse.

How did you manage to get a "dual only" policy? I've heard of these and tried to get one myself, but my broker said it didn't make any difference if I only wanted to give dual. They could only quote for open rental.

I had a "dual only" policy last year and this year I shopped more and found what seems to be a good company that will allow me to solo students in a TW with supervision and its less than the "dual only" policy. Mine is just under $4200/yr. Shop around, its worth taking the time.

Hmmm.... I'm surprised that's all your broker offered. They are quite common in the TW world.
