Commercial Glider

I logged my first bit of time in gliders a few months ago. I'm hooked. It is my spring time goal! It is a serious amount of fun.

I've been thinking about doing it too. What did it cost ya? There is a glider place not far from here looking for a CFI-G.

If they need a CFI-G, see if they will do the rating for free or a deep discount. Burnout is pretty high for glider instructors. It doesn't pay well and is a big time investment.

Being an instructor means you won't fly for fun much, with just a commercial you'll end up doing sightseeing rides - probably more fun...

Do you soar at the TBSS at ZPH? If so, I think I might have seen you there in the L-13 yesterday with the examiner.

That would have been me, yes... Sorry I needed to leave the holiday party early, had to pack for my trip.

How long have you been a member there? Will you be out there next Saturday?

Ha, I was the one who took the picture of you after the ride. I actually just joined last week, it was always something I wanted to try so I figured the club would be the best way to do it. I most likely will be out there this weekend. I'm the youngest person there, so I'll be easy to spot. :D Congrats again on the commercial!

Ink is still wet. After 10 years of flying, I'm amazed how nervous I was. I wouldn't have passed me. Test jitters aside, the oral was fine. While my flying wasn't as smooth as I would like, apparently it was within the PTS. No one would mistake me for Bob Hoover though.

Does that mean you're qualified to shoot a Hudson river approach? :D

I don't have an Instrument Glider rating, it would have to be for the visual :)

Actually, does anyone know how to get one? There are instrument gliders, apparently the rating doesn't exist in the US though.

It has always been fuzzy in the US, I know a few people that have instrument gliders, and go up in the Cu and down through Overcast coming in from the wave. I have never gotten a good answer to this question either though, so maybe they aren't even supposed to be doing it. :dunno:

It is huge in Europe though, I think before you get the equivalent of a commercial glider license over there you need some sailplane instrument training.

If you hold a instrument airplane rating you can use your instrument rating in the glider as well. At least thats how the local FSDO Inspector explained it to me when I got mine.

Congratulations! I'd like to get my glider add-on as well. How was the transition? Did much of the materials/skills learned as a power-pilot correspond to glider flying? Any major issues that you struggled with?

Thanks!

Those proficent in flying a tailwheel airplane tend to do better when moving over into flying gliders. It requires good stick and rudder skills and proper energy management. The knowledge is similar yet there are these to learn though. Soaring, find thermals will be all new to you. Things like glide ratio will be much more used in gliding than you have in flying an airplane. Overall it will make you a better power pilot.
