Commercial checkride with iPad!

Huge thanks to CodyJP for helping me get through my Commercial checkride this week!

And the best part was that I was able to use my iPad 2/foreflight for all the cross country and flight planning requirements! :rawk:
 
Congrats...I am not familiar with what the IPAD is capable of doing...I imagine foreflight is capable of WCA, Fuel Burn etc. Are you saying the examiner allowed that over old pencil and paper?

Yup, didn't use a single paper chart for the entire checkride.. (Even used it to replace the AF/D)

Foreflight is capable of calculating total fuel burn and WCA with current winds aloft, however, it won't factor in time/fuel burn for the climb.. So I did that part by hand

When I took my commercial check ride, my examiner told me I had better have a computerized plan of some sort. He didn't care where it came from, but that I could do it that way. His logic was that, if you are flying for a living, you don't generally have time to mess around with a paper and pencil.

Pretty good logic too. The DE I took my instrument ride with liked the fact that I used a DUATS printout instead of a hand written Nav log. Just remember to factor in that DUATS does not include required reserves in fuel calculations and I'd have a hard time understanding why a DPE would prefer a hand written one with the exception of maybe the private ride.
 
One of my students just used the iPad for his private checkride. No complaints from the examiner but he wasn't allowed to use the moving map/gps in foreflight.
 
I'd say learn and teach both ways. You never know where you'd end up in a place that does not have internet acces or when your technology decides not to work anymore. There's this FBO that I fly into Mexico that always has roving internet. Some days it works and some days it doesn't.
 
Congratulations! I actually just ordered an ipad 2 today and am going to run the same setup. Do you use the gps and foreflight pro to have the airplane on your charts with yours? Or just foreflight HD for to just use the charts?
 
I just did my IPC with the iPad. Used Foreflight HD. Was different, but I think I like it!

I don't know if pro is worth the extra $75 a year just to see yourself on the plates. But I can see if you go into complex airports how it would help on taxi...

Might be good for SA on approach, but I haven't upgraded yet.

I just caught this thread as I put in a pre-order for an iPad 2 the other day. Would I need the 3G option if I was going to get Foreflight?
 
Either that, or get an external GPS like the BadElf GPS or there are a few bluetooth ones.

I found that the 3G added about $150 and the GPSs are only $99. I wasn't going to pay for a 3G service so I choose the WiFi and external GPS.

the only advantage of buying the 3g is that you can subscribe to the plan and get internet *almost* anywhere..

If you have no intention of subscribing for the 3g plan, id recommended the wifi only model, and buy an external gps unit.. (badelf ect..)

it'll do a better job of locking a gps signal than the internal gps chip apple built into the 3g models
