Color Vision Standards

Hi Dr. Forred,

I have spoken with you before about the color vision standards. I am currently a cargo pilot with close to 2000 hours. I Passed my first 3 medicals with no color vision issues but on my 4th try with a new doctor and a new test I could not even see the first plate, the control, in the machine (The one with the blue-green dots and a red number).

Anyways...I passed a falant, and then I even passed the Ishihara plates. I was just wondering if you know if they would ever get rid of the Ishihara plates for some new test??? I was also wondering if you could ask Oklahoma city if they would ever or have considered getting rid of the ishihara???

I am considering getting out of flying and going back to school for another degree. I was just curious if you think the standards/tests are subject to change again??? If I was your child, would you advise me to go back to school for another degree in a new field??? I am still 25 but I dont want to be 45 with 3 kids and then find out they changed the standards/tests again and be unable to pass the new test. I also dont trust the new MFT. I know the lights are easier to see for EVERYONE at certain times of day and in certain wx conditions. There are too many uncontrolled conditions for the MFT, in my opinion.

Thanks Doc.

I do not think they will get rid of the Ishihara. It is the standard across the country.

The other thing to realize is there are 4500 AME's and asking them to all purchase a new color vision test would "place an undue burden" on them. So for practical reasons I doubt they will ever change the test. They could add a new one if one is developed though.

If you were my kid, I would tell you to keep flying and start to take classes to work on a degree over the next 6-7 years. You can do this on-line if the schedule does not allow on-site classes. It is always good to have options available.

Thanks for the quick response Doc. You provide an amazing service here at JetCareers. Thanks for all the info you provide.

Yeah, the Doc does a heck of a job. I almost feel guilty seeing all the random stuff he gets asked. I'm sure it's quite time consuming for him and his staff. Thank you for your service Sir.
