Colonoscopy

Was thinking of doing my first colonoscopy...I am 48....went to my gastro due to some blood when I went to the bathroom...He said it was external so no fear there...He did say I could do the colonoscopy before age 50 if I want....

Will the FAA have any issues if I did get one before the age of 50 or do they not care as long as everything is normal??? Seems like 50 is the magic number to get it although my gastro says it does not matter when you get it...

Also, How do I report it on the FAA medical??....My next medical is not until October.

Actually one more question Doc....It is not a screening Colonoscopy...It is diagnostic....Will I have to put down diagnostic Colonscopy and will the FAA hav an
issue with it if nothing is found??

I'm sure your friends will tell you this too, but getting ready for the procedure is about 50 times worse than the procedure. In fact, by the time you get there you'll be so happy to fall asleep you'll want to kiss the anesthetist.
 
Plus one on what Houston said. It's not a big deal and you won't remember a thing. Worst part is the pre-op diet and fasting. And the laxative.
 
The only advise I can add is to make sure you eat something AFTER the procedure. You are probably going to take a nap when you get home to sleep off the drugs they give you. Remember that your stomach is pumped full of air (so they can see what is going on in there) so it feels pretty full, even though there is absolutely (and I do mean absolutely) nothing in there after the very unpleasant draining process you went through the night before. So, you are going to wake up from your nap, with all the air having err... "leaked" out and you are going to feel like your entire stomach has collapsed. That part was not so pleasant, although eating a couple of crackers seemed to solve it quickly.
 
..... but the good side is you can go home and pass the most outrageous flatulence ....... it's your one chance to get even with the family dog for turning the air blue many times over the years.

Depending on the drug used, you may remember. I was conscious, and remember the whole thing. I think I would've preferred to be unconscious!

I get two drugs in a shot. One makes you very sleepy and relaxed and the other is a drug (Versed) and it makes it so you do not remember the procedure at all. Both wear off very quickly and you feel no side/after effects or wooziness. You are just suddenly alert and "normal". I also don't drink the powder and water stuff the night before. I use the pills instead. Much easier.

I know a lot of people get that one. My doc used something different. She said most people are fine with it, but she could up the dose if it wasn't enough. I still remember the whole deal, and conversed with her during the procedure, etc.
 
Just report it as the good doc said. I've had a couple and they are no big deal. As DE727 said the worst part is the prep and the pre procedure diet for a day. Don't let the Go-lightly name on the bottle fool you. It should be named go-heavily and will clean you out no problem.

As far as the procedure goes, you will remember very little if at all and will have a great nap and tremendous flatulence afterwards.
