Cockpit Porn (Air Canada)

I agree that things like cockpit nudity have seen their day. It is only my opinion so please don't get bent out of shape by it.

I have seen it more in my short civilian career than I have seen it in the Navy, btw. The PC police have made the military about as squeaky clean as possible these days. I would say much more so than the airlines. I just find it unfortunate that people are slinging around terms like "harassment free workplace" over something so benign. I guess my point is that in the grand scheme of things, this seems pretty low on the list of stuff to worry about, but I digress. I think it is humorous, not erotic or demeaning to anyone. Maybe I need to sit through some more lectures on sensitivity. I understand that not everyone feels that way, and I respect that.

Again, only my opinion. I am all onboard with the way that the cockpit "workplace" has evolved and have never been prone to career endangering stunts, so rest assured.
Oh, indeed. It warrants a chuckle, and I usually get even more of a laugh out of management efforts to eradicate it that often take on stuffy and formal tones. If I'd written the memorandum it would have gone "Hey guys. Transport Canada found some porn on the 175 the other day. They didn't like that. They're our regulator and think it's a safety problem. They asked us to do something aboot it. Would you hosers please stop leaving your porn around? Or, failing that, at least make sure you don't show Transport Canada the strippers from your knock-down, drag-out Vegas layover? Thanks for your attention, please continue flying good airplanes."

I would find it a questionable use of TC/FAA's time (category: bigger, more safety-critical fish to fry), but it would be a perfectly appropriate use of HR's time. (especially if the regulator says don't do that.)

I'm okay with making the military clean its act up too (see: Tailhook). ;)

That lady needs to quit whining and go fly a kitchen.
BOOM!

Seriously though, the type who cause a huge stink about this are also the women who want equal treatment. Ok fair enough. THere has been porn in flight decks for years, way before women wer allowed in there, and now G.I. Jane comes along and wants to change it.

I'd seriously like to know if you'd tell your mom, wife, sister, daughter, whatever that if any of them were to want to be a pilot.

I'm not offended by porn. But if others don't want it up there, they have the right to that. I'd feel mighty uncomfortable if my wife was a pilot and some dude pulled out a picture and stuck it behind the yoke.

Regardless on how you feel on the issue, there is plenty of precedent on the issue putting it in the sexual harassment category. Is looking at a naked picture REALLY worth risking your job? Is it REALLY that much of an inconvenience that this turns into an issue worth fighting over?

I say no. Just because "that's the way it always has been" is an extremely closed minded way at looking at things.

I'm offended by obese RJ pilots wearing commando sweaters, and since the tight sweaters show their man-boobs I think that fat men in commando sweaters should be construed as sexual harassment.

Professional or not? If you want to be a professional then be one.

We're not just talking professionalism here, we're talking highly inappropriate sexual materials. Not wearing the proper uniform is unprofessional, but it doesn't even begin to approach the level of sexual harassment, which is exactly what having porn in the cockpit is.

I agree, but to think that we have to distinguish between professionalism and not sexually harassing people in the work place is ludicrous. I'm a guy and I'd be offended if that mess showed up in the cockpit. Get your crap together and grow up.

At EK we had a lot of "porn" in the cockpit. Not what you guys are thinking though. A lot of Thai names have "porn" somewhere in them:

It has several different meanings in Thai depending on how it's spelled.

When you pronounce it in Thai, it doesn't have much of an "r" sound. This is why it can also be spelled in English as "pon" or "phon".

When it's spelled พร it means "blessing." This is one of the most common meanings in Thai names.
For example:

ชัยพร = Chaiyaporn (ชัย + พร = victory blessing)
ศิริพร = Siriporn (ศิริ + พร = majestic blessing)
สมพร = Somporn (สม + พร = worthy of blessing)
วรพร = Woraporn (วร + พร = beautiful chosen blessing)
ภัทรพร = Pataraporn (ภัทร + พร = glorious blessing)
อำพร = Amporn (อัม + พร = hidden blessing)
อิทธิพร = Ittiporn (อิทธิ + พร = powerful blessing)
เพ็ญสุพร = Pensuporn (เพ็ญ + สุ + พร = blessing of the beautiful full moon)
ฐิติพร = Thidiporn (ฐิติ + พร = livelihood blessing)
พรชัย = Pornchai (พร + ชัย = blessing victory)
พรทิพย์ = Porntip (พร + ทิพย์ = devine blessing)

Another spelling in names is พล which means "power", but with this spelling it's often written as "phol" or "pol" in English.

For example:

ปองพล = Pongporn or Pongpol (ปอง + พล = desires power)
วันพล = Wanporn or Wanpol (วัน + พล = power of the day)
It can also be spelled ภรณ์. For example:
สุภาภรณ์ = Supaporn (สุภาพ = polite)
ธิภาภรณ์ = Thipaporn (ธิภา = ray of light)

So with the hundreds of Thai cabin crew, and especially on a BKK flight, it was not unusual to have "porn" in the cockpit :)

Today I learned that porn is a blessing.

That's really nice that you see it that way, but you still have a right to a harassment-free workplace. The fact that I'm not personally bothered by it doesn't mean that someone else won't be.

Also, this is NOT the Navy.

I agree!

However, to play devil's advocate: if you don't want to see it, don't look for it! I've never seen porn in a cockpit where it was out on full display for all to see.

I've found it in the QRH on the exact page I needed to run an abnormal. I appreciated it, but I can see how others might not and respect that.

Would you also not get bent out of shape, if your captain/co-pilot pulled out gay porn pics? Or turned on his phone sans ear plugs and watched gay porn videos on X-Tube at flight level?

Would you consider that to be a harassing cockpit for the length of your trip with said pilot? I ask this because in most cases, there's often a huge double standard.

No. Maybe a bit puzzled by that behavior, which I would view as being perhaps a bit strange, but not harassed or offended just like a gay dude telling me I am attractive wouldn't bother me one bit.
I am not talking about pulling out porn and looking at it, with the end goal being some sort of arousal or harassment. I am talking about looking behind a panel and seeing a photo of a naked human pasted there. Two totally different animals. I think we are on two different planets here. Watching porn or looking at porn that you have carried on your person in order to have it in the cockpit is weird. A hard charging maintenance person anonymously pasting a photo behind a panel is different. And no, I don't care if it is a boob or a dong. Still funny.

Okay. Just wondering because even in this thread some people are saying being PC killing everything. In some cases, I agree. In this case, not so much. It would just be odd, and uncomfortable to look at porn in a small enclosed space with another dude. Hell with another person, who isn't your special someone.

Some people might say get over yourself and stop being a weenie. But would probably stroke out, if the scenario I described occurred, and wouldn't see/understand the double standard. Porn is porn to me, just different parts going in different holes. Which either way IMO violates common decency rules in a 121 cockpit.

The question of "why are you disassembling the cockpit without a mechanic's rating" comes to mind. Not that it's ever been used in a porn proceeding, either.
