Cockpit lighting at night?

This what I use when driving my C-152/172 heavy.
;)
It has the 4 LED, Red filter, and four settings: high, med, low, and flashing. I used to have an energizer headlamp from Target but found the battery compartment sucked and you had to cycle through the white lights to get the red to come on at the end. With the Petzl, you just flip up the filter and you're good to go! I'm sure the op wasnt talking about flying GA.

This could be an overlooked opportunity, set lights to flashing for best of both worlds. See charts/guages while light is on, see and avoid while out, repeat process. :D

For the few GA night flights I've done I liked lights as low as possible to see outside better, both for potential traffic and just the fun of being in a small plane at night with a moon, etc.

It flashes at maximum illumination, even with the red filter on it would seem like another beacon going off. No thanks. It is a great headlamp for GA stuff. I'm very happy with it. The minimum setting is great.
After reading this thread I'm now checking this one out:

You can detach it from the headstrap and affix it to a holder which then attaches to either clothes or shoulder restraint. I'm sure there are other possibilities.
Just waiting for another REI discount coupon and it will be mine!

Airplane : I have it up a bit, but not at the point that I can read a map or AFD from the light coming from the panel. Of course I fly VFR in a 172.

In my car the panel is set to the one setting that it has that automatically comes on when the headlights come on. Cant change that.

What cockpit lights? I have two TV's going and even on Dim at night is hard to see outside. I set the MFD to its lowest setting, as well as the 2 Garmins, and leave the PFD slightly higher.

aren't you Mr fancy pants . . .just hang a towel over all of that stuff and look outside!

As soon as I'm cruising switch lights are completly turned off (except when I need to see the fuel pump switch to change tanks, but even then it's barely on) and the instruments are dimmed so I can just barley see them at all and and they stay that way until descent/approach.

I likes me to see them thar perty stars at nite.
