CMEL, require a PMEL?

So yeah, this may be a silly question.

But, since I really have no intention of ever flying a multi engine airplane for free, or at least not for hire. . .I must ask the following.

Must one have their PP-MEL rating BEFORE they can train for their CMEL?

Excuse the ignorance.

I think the PMEL is required, as the CMEL is an add-on to that..

However, I am not 100% sure.. So I probably shouldn't have even posted..

Oh well.. Too late.. ;)

In short - no.
Long answer - some kind of private certificate is required though. A single engine will do. You can get the CMEL as your initial commercial license or as an add-on to your single commercial. Doing it as an initial means that you have to meet all the aeronautical experience requirements (XCountry, night touch and goes at towered airport, instrument instruction, etc.), so getting your single commercial and doing the multi add-on is generally the cheaper way of doing it. If you're going to do the CMEL as initial, it may be worth it to get the private first - this way you can log all the training time that you do for the CMEL as PIC.

Got my CMEL as the initial with a PSEL, so it's no big deal. You just have to fulfill the Comm requirements (or at least the ones that need to be) in a ME plane. Don't beleive the hype on the "Gotta have a PMEL." I only did one PMEL at Skymates, and that was b/c the guy was selling his Bonanza and getting a Seneca.

Thanks Steve. No one was feeding me any hype, I just didn't want to get finished with my IA, move into the multi, start flying it, and then eventually told I have a PMEL checkride coming up. . . lol :)
