Closest Calls/Scariest Moments

Any one of many close calls while IATA was still at KYRN airfield. That of course coupled with one of the funniest moments when a chinese student responded to, "123xy immediate 360!" with a very calm, "Clear a' land a' rrrrunway 360."

Any time I brought down a dispatch to the flight deck, found the FO sitting alone, and asked if I could "speak with the REAL pilot."

Lost an engine just after rotation today in a Mojave with 3 people on board, 200 gal of fuel, in 100 degree heat. Wasn't exactly a fun afternoon.

This all happened few years ago I was flying traffic watch. Weeks before it all happened I saved quite a while for the first generation "traffic avoidance" boxes that would only tell you when traffic was around you in distances and altitudes and not give any general direction (basically keep your scan going). Well flying northbound on a particular freeway the box starts telling me somethings moving in fast 5.0...4.0...2.0....0.5 TRAFFIC (in less than 10 seconds). I look all over the place and then I see a Kingair less than 100 feet fly from my immediate right to left same altitude. I was so close that I could see the pale facial expressions of shock in both of the other pilots. During this I pull back as hard as I could and barely and I mean barely miss the other plane. After that happened myself and the 2 reporters were speechless for about the next 30 minutes.... That box is the best $400 i've ever spent in GA.

From this I learned even though it's outside of the particular airports airspace to query if someone is on an approach to that airport every time I crossed that extended centerline for traffic watch.

I sometimes fly with a guy who will set the TCAS to "above/below" as one of his memory items on every takeoff. You'd think we were dodging missiles. They're all out to get us! Not sure how I survived 5000+ hours with no TCAS, cause every flight it's a Code Red. I'm waiting till he starts lecturing me on the dangers of meteorites.

PS. brigadeaviator, your avatar is awesome. Not sure how deeply seditious it was intended to be, but I found it funny on multiple levels. :D

I was shooting an ILS under the hood when I heard my CFI say "woaaaahh!" and peeked up (I know, I know) to see a Decathlon coming out of a loop towards us right about our altitude. Passes maaaaaaybe a half mile off our right wingtip and does an aileron roll.
I really haven't had any crap my pants moments in my 150 hours so I guess I've been pretty lucky... so far.
Until about 10 days after you posted that and we came waaaaaaaaay too close to a tower. Lucky it was on the GPS.
