Close Call...Runway Incursion Today Between United and Delta

Re: Close Call...Runway Incursion Today Between United and D

The crew I think was supposed to have a meeting with someone at the FAA after this incident that day, but ATL convinced them to continue flying their rotation. Which is good because rebooking a 757 full of pissed off people whose flight just got xld = no fun.

Yes and flying after nearly dying = a good idea...

Yeap, the best!

I think i heard from doug that after a situation that is abnormal, they give them the day off and something about possibly speaking with a psych.

That is pretty darn close...so with a quick glance at the approach plate I figured this much...of course this is a REAL general wag.

There was about +/-2200 feet between the possible touch down point (500' beyond the displaced threshold) and where "D" intersects 9L. If they touched down at about 115 kts (assuming approach speed is around 125? Again, just a guess, since I'm not a 57 dude) that means that they could have been within "contact" with that UAL in under 11 seconds. This doesn't figure the runway that was eaten up during the acceleration for the G/A...Not my idea of a good time.

Again, these are just VERY general numbers, so don't come down on me too hard! :)

I don't understand how this could have happened. Right before and during the flare, wouldn't the crew be looking down the length of the runway? And wouldn't they see the Delta flight taxiing across the runway?

I don't understand why they hadn't begun a go-around already.

Thoughts?

Some incursions/near misses unfold very fast. It can go from "Keep an eye on that 737" on very short final to everybody (Captain, FO, FE, JS, passengers, ATC, ground crew) yelling "GO AROUND GO AROUND GO AROUND!!!!1111" all at the same time.

Nah, no psych, but going off duty is generally a great idea. Any chief pilot worth his weight is going to send you to the hotel after a serious, "Life flashing before your eyes" event.

The morning we had an engine problem, I felt absolutely fine, but when we got to the hotel and the adrenalin began to wear off I slept for about 9 hours.
