Cleared to Fly the G1000

I received my copy of this interactive 7 DVD set from King Schools today & will need a few days to get through it, but when I do I will happily post it's benefits (from a CFI POV & student POV) and drawbacks.

From what I see it seems quite thorough.

Still better than the 6 hour ground school we had before. But hey, we gotta do what the insurance companies say......

I wish they would just come out with a user friendly sim that is available online and that runs on most computers.

Not to mention maybe update the CBI kit to feature the NavIII package if you prefer that over the steam gauges.

I have 1 and a half students starting out with their private in this thing. One guys is very sharp so far in terms of his studies and stuff but I am still not sure if starting out from hour 0 in the G1000 is a better option than the old school version.

The Cessna rep seems to think the G1000 is the best way to go, who woulda thought?

Haha, I'm going to need to get one big sticky note for that G1000 so I can do what is in my avatar!

Yeah, I have it but it isn't formatted to run on smaller resolution screens and it is really slow. My student said he bought it for like $3 or something but that he couldnt run it on his PC... Same deal with mine and I thought I had a fast laptop. It has all kinds of memory and stuff in it for games.

the online one for $3 by garmin needs something along the lines of a screen res of 2080x1024. That's huge. I play games and have a video card which makes the res like 1024x800. 2080 is absurd.

yeah exactly... I guess they figure if you can afford a qtr million dollar airplane you probably have a pimped out computer system too?

I think Cessna would do well by spending money on getting people interested in it through a free sim online such as the G430 on that is available.

Then again, they are stopping production of the older steam gauges so I guess people either learn it in the plane or they don't fly.

It's actually 1280 x 1024, and the reason for this--as well as the moderately high minmum system requirements--is that the sim uses the same code as the real system. My 1.7 GHz Pentium M doesn't meet the 1.8 GHz minimum, but it will run--barely. When my CPU gets behind the curve, the G1000 starts failing indicators.

The big limitation seems to be the lack of support for systems with Intel Integrated Video instead of a separate video card--affects lower-end laptops, mostly.
