clearance delivery

Well, SMyrna is big time now! They completed the new terminal on the west side of the airport, and CFM is sittin' fat and happy these days!

Of course, with the growth, the days of "Diamond 223NH, winds are calm, cleared to land runway 19, cross 32/14 after landing, taxi to the ramp with me" while you're 20 miles to the south are over!

The tower was open and it was at night. I was trying to teach to the student good cockpit management and about using all available resources. So we called up approach by telephone and asked for a clearance. The guy was just being lazy. He was working ground also. So he could have given us our clearance by phone.

Lazy? Maybe, maybe not.

I was on the phone with the tower somewhere in Wisconsin (Racine?) just a few weeks ago, and asked the controller if I could pick up my clearance. She said no, sorry, call her on the radio. The reason? The radio frequency is recorded while the phone line was not. Gotta have a record, just in case...

Phone is normally the best way,...I'd call FSS on the phone.

If you are using a cell phone and you dial 1-800-WX BRIEF you will get the FSS from your home area. It throws them a curve ball when you are in Washington State looking for a clearance and you are talking to someone in PA. We carry a file of the FSS and thier local phone numbers so that we can talk to the appropriate folks.

Good advice - I had to make a couple changes on a flight plan that we had on file. When I called FSS, I got Dayton which was from my old cell phone calling area. Evidently, you can only make changes to a flight plan by calling the FSS where it was originally filed. The Dayton Specialist got pissy when I asked if he could pull up a flight plan that was filed in Virginia (no, he couldn't).

I just plugged in a bunch of more common FSS direct numbers into my cell yesterday!

On the same note, if you use DUATS to file a flight plan, it's tough to change something by calling FSS. I've had to do that a couple of times, and wound up filing new flight plans since it was easier.
