Clear Direct

I was on a IFR flight plane and was cleared as filed. When I took off the control said...clear direct to xyz airport. i said that our filed rout was to intercept the 053 out of irw then the 233 tul. Control came back with clear direct. so i just picked up the tul vor and followed it. i did not file GPS, so why would be give me a clear direct?

A lot of TRACONs are going "strip-less" these days, meaning they don't have your aircraft data in front of them. They may have just automatically assumed you were GPS/RNAV equipped.

It's gotten to the point with Potomac Approach that they will "re-clear" me to fly an arrival into IAD for which I had already filed, been cleared by delivery, and am currently flying.

Yup, approach facilities tend to ignore or don't get the equipment code and just assume GPS.

Just say "unable direct, but I can accept a vector." and you should be fine.

:yeahthat:

I am guilty of it too, even do it to the POS Delta(Former NWA) DC9's that are /W. "Proceed direct....oh wait you can't do that...ummm...fly heading 100" ------(Completely dejected pilot of a dinosaur plane "Fly heading 100)

And Travis that's just the IAD area they are fanatical about their "descend via's", god forbid they take someone off an arrival and actually have to do some controlling( :D I hope one of them reads this and gets all upset, we have a lot of area rivalry)

It's all good for me. It's either "fly heading 340, intercept the 1L/C/R localizer" from 40 miles out to the south, or "fly the BARIN1, expect a base leg over the river". The BARIN1 is actually a pretty useful STAR, just as I'm sure the RAVNN is for you guys landing 10. Keeps you on a nice downwind and far enough away from the FRZ so the controller doesn't have to keep an eye on us.

It's also gotten to the point where they'll say "after BARIN, fly heading 010" to which I'll reply "the winds up here are 270/20, how about we go direct MIXNN and make everyone's life a lot easier?" I've yet to have that request turned down.

It happens to me all the time, as my aircraft is /A. Just ask for your on course heading and 9 times out of 10 you'll get it.

Remember, the DC-9 is so Chuck Norris the entire earth changes its orientation to allow a smooth landing.

I fly a "/A" myself most of the time (It's soon to be /G with all the bells and whistles but money, you know...) — "When able direct FUBAR" "Sir, I'm /A today" "Oh yeah...heading so and so"

I have been cleared direct to an airport with a vector - usually something like "Fly heading 250, direct to the Santa Barbara airport". With radar vectors, your slant code becomes irrelevant.

No strips. Have an aircraft type in the data block (shared), but no equip. As it's already been stated, an "unable direct, can we get a vector" fixes it...until you are freq changed to the next controller who will probably repeat the process =)
