Class 3 medical & getting a type rating for FUN?

Let's say that JUST FOR FUN I wanted to get a type rating in a 737. Can I do so with only a class 3 medical (diabetic) since it's just for "fun", and not to pursue an airline career?

Or would I need an ATP cert first before I can go
for the type rating? Would I NEED a class 1 medical just to take the ATP course, even though I never intend to use it professionally?

You need no medical to train in a Sim, and a PPL can do a B737 course, there's an article in Flying about a guy who did that.

You still have to fly to ATP standards though, and if you have 1500hrs you can get the cert at the same time.

Alex.

First, you can get a PPL type rating.

Second, in the ATP PTS it says, "a minimum of a third-class medical certificate, if a medical certificate is required (not required for simulator)"

So you don't even have to have a medical.

Does that give you the A/B737 on your cert? If I have a lot of money when I'm older, it would be fun to waste some of it on getting a PPL with a 737 type rating.

I think getting the rating is like 6-7 grand.

No type, just go down there, do some ground and like an hour or so of sim. It would be fun if you had an extra few hundred just lying around.

just get flight sim......there are better way to spend money something you can actually use with a PPL and third class, and they are much more fun then that....

for that much I'd rather spend 2k on the best computer I could build, and spend the rest on equipment to make the simulator more realistic (multiple monitors, sweet speakers, etc)

I think that would actually be fantastic. have a sweet sim at home... even if it wouldn't be as realistic as the ones that are on hydraulics, it would be pretty fantastic.
