Civil Air Patrol to fly "Surrogate Predator" for Military

Re: Civil Air Patrol to fly "Surrogate Predator" for Militar

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but CAP is an organization akin to the Boy Scouts of America, right?

Others have corrected your misperception, and I won't belabor that point, other than to offer something I heard once: CAP is the Air Force's version of the volunteer fire department. All our "Air Force-assigned missions" are noncombat tasks the USAF would have to otherwise do itself, and in most instances it is far more practical/economical to accomplish these tasks with a volunteer aircrew in a Cessna than in an HH-60 or C-130.

And just like most volunteer fire departments, CAP inherits much from its parent--uniforms, culture, etc. (Which isn't to say that they're identical, by any means.) Many of you find great humor in mocking CAP members for their wear of flight suits; do you similarly mock volunteer firefighters for wearing turn-out gear? Flight suits aren't worn because we think they're stylish. They're either too hot or not warm enough, and not nearly as comfortable as some of the other options available to us. But the thing is, flight suits are not just a garment; they're protective gear, same as the turn-out gear mentioned above.

Now, it's true that there isn't a huge risk of a flash fire in a general aviation aircraft, but it has happened. Truth told, occupants of general aviation aircraft are at far greater risk of death or injury due to blunt force trauma, particularly to the head. So while you might mock the dude in the picture, he's got a better chance of surviving an accident than you do.

My point is this: "Green Flag" is the exercise *for the USAF crews*. The Army *supports* USAF aircrew training at Green Flag with their ground exercises (sort of, but you get the idea). If USAF crews aren't getting the training, then it's not "Green Flag".

If the Army is getting the training/support, then technically the CAP is supporting the Army component (by substituting for the USAF Preds/Reapers)...which is not Green Flag.
I see your point, but I guess I'm just following the money--which is coming from ACC, not the Army.

Good point, aloft. I haven't bought into the flight suit yet, I just roll with the blue shirt and grey slacks. Combat boots are too giant to get out of the plane quickly... especially if you're back-seating it.

Re: Civil Air Patrol to fly "Surrogate Predator" for Militar

I attended a Powered Flight Encampment when I was 16. I got the flight suit and everything...it was really awesome at the time, especially when all the college women at the campus we were staying on kept flirting with us. :laff: Ah to be a kid again! There's a few serious issues with the organization, I've personally experienced them, but I had some good fun when I was a cadet.

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

...there I can do it too, and I one up ya!!!

Seriously, this forum is an educational tool, right?

I was wrong and ill informed about CAP and thus rightly educated, and that's some how bad? And deserving of an angry emoticon...?

If so, then I'll just carry on with my ill informed impression, totally forgetting the fact that I was corrected and learned otherwise!

Bonus points..

Sorry Max, I used the wrong one, meant to use :(, it wasn't aimed directly at you anyway. More at those who seem to think that CAP is full of a bunch of yahoo's that want to play dress up.

As for the guy in the picture that everyone like to make fun of>

I wear the Nomex flightsuit (Dark Blue) on CAP missions, because a guy I know that was wearing one of the other uniforms, had survived a crash only to be badly burned. The only place he wasn't burned was his hands, He was wearing Nomex Gloves! Washington Wing actually required nomex suits and gloves be worn on all operational missions because of that accident.

I wear a survival vest (normal aircrew issue) on operational missions, particularly in the mountains, because sometimes you don't have time to grab your survival gear while evacuating a downed aircraft. It's actually not very comfortable to wear, but personally I'd rather have it with me than watch it burn up in the plane.

The mae-west is required by regulation for overwater missions

The brain bucket, can't answer that one, although I understand some Wings (Alaska) require one for some missions.

Thanks for taking a stand, Bill.

LOL...There's a little bit of truth to that

Sure is...

Well on of the guys in our squadron just landed himself a slot (mostly because of AFROTC) so I guess you could say that ;)

Re: Civil Air Patrol to fly "Surrogate Predator" for Militar

We've had two from my squadron go Air Force and two to the Regionals. These were the younger "senior" pilots. Most of our pilots are late 30s and older with established careers in other fields or retired from either the military or airlines.
