When did airtran start flying 757's? i saw one depart DCA yesterday. Was i seeing things or are they departing from their standard of 717's? maybe i am just out of teh loop, but i always thought they stuck to the 717

You may have seen the A320 flown by Ryan with Air Tran paint on it.

Yeah, I think they may have more than one now. I see an AirTran 320 come into MCO two-three times a day. Sometimes they're pretty close together. I doubt they could leave here, fly to ATL, unload, load and get back in two and half hours.

I didn't realize but I was in MCO yesterday for about an hour. Man, I didn't realize they added the second east runway!

According to a jumpseat we had from Air Tran, apparently Ryan's losing it's tail on each route they fly for Air Tran, but I wonder what the scoop is on the shorter routes because the A320's were supposed to be for test markets where the 717 couldn't reach because of range issues.

Who knows!

Yeah, they opened 17L/35R over Christmas. I think they just use it for landings now until they finish paving the connecting taxiways. I know 17R/35L is closed. I can see the huge "x" from the SWA gates.

The captain was wondering why we didn't get 35L and then taxiing off of 35R, we saw the big "X" and thought, "ahhh!"

That's A LONG taxi to the Dellah Southernjets ramp.

Even had a chance to tell him the trivia about how to tell a SWA -700 from a -300/500.

In about a year, it'll be REAL easy. Right now, just look at the underside of the wings. If you see red, it's a -700. The real trick is spotting the difference between a 300 and a 500 from a distance. A 500 looks like a 300 that's been punched in the nose, but it's hard to see from a ways back. You COULD just look at the tail numbers. -300 all start with either a 3 or 6, -500 start with a 5, and -700s start with a 7 or 4. Newer -700s start with 4, and the highest one I've seen was N455WN. That was last week, and it was only 10 days old.

I thought that if the flap actuator tracks were painted orange (or whatever color that is, I'm a heterosexual male with no color skillz) it's a -700 and if it's the standard air superiority grey, it's a -300/500.

Red on some orange on others. Depends on how old they are and how long they've been in the sun.

You guys can't ID an airplane by color.....what are you thinking

From behind all the NG 737s have two holes instead of one where the APU ehaust is.
The main landing gear doors are different shaped from the "Classics". Forget the "color" of the flap tracks, look at their shapes. The Classics inboard flap canoe is squared off (from the JT8 days. The -300/400 still have the squared end). All the NGs have pointed ends.

The NGs also have the landing lights in the lower belly faring instead of the wings.

Ryan won't be losing their shirts much longer since the A320s will go away when the 737s start arriving on AirTran property.

From what I understand the shorter routes on the 320s were just tacked on to have single-plane service in some markets (i.e. SFO-ATL-MCO) and to increase utilization. It'll all be moot soon anyway.

All these new runways are being built far away from the terminals ... 17L/35R at MCO, 8L/26R at IAH ... all of them need a rest area between the runway and the ramp!

Saw my first winglet-equipped SWA -700 at RDU the other day ... pretty slick looking bird!

Would atc still use citrus as a call sign? im pretty sure he said a b-757 when he gave wake turb warning to the rj on a 2 mile final. i saw the plane from the road, but had my scanner turned on. it was kinda dark too.....

Doug, how can a 320 be a heavy?

As per the FAR definition, it's not.

As per the Doug Taylor definition, I certainly couldn't pick one up!

Nah, not even that David Blaine guy either.

Beat me to it! I was trying to think up a similar-sounding callsign on a 757 operator but couldn't. You da man, Matt! Even money it was "Cactus" since America West does, I believe, fly the 757 out of DCA to/from PHX.

I dont know..it might have been...but i thought it was weird that airtran had a 757..thats why i posted. Anyhow, maybe i misheard them....ill keep my eyees peeled and let you know what if i see something else confirming this.

Another way to tell a 737-700 from a "classic". The classic have a long "pylon" thing in the back of the wing that is paralel with the engine.

It cause the triple slotted fowler to be two flaps.

On the 737-700 that pylon thing isn't there and the 737-700's double slotted fowler is one whole flap on both wings.

Actually it might have two flaps on each wing but there very close together with no clear divider.

Anyone know why that pylon I spoke of is called and why it is there on the classics?

Lastly does anyone know if SWA has plans to paint all there planes with orange flap fairings like on the 700?

I hope not it makes the 700 distinct and it will be all that much harder to spot em. Well maybe not since most of the 700's are getting winglets.

I'm here in PHX bringing some stuff to my apt. before I drive down here again next week for good and I see the new 700's with winglets alot here I had real mixed feelings about em at first but they look sweet.

Does SWA have plans to augment there 300-500's with winglets as well?

Again I hope not cause it would just be impossible to tell a 300/500 from a 700 if that was the case with the exception of the underbelly landing lights on the 700 and the flap fairing lights on the classic's.

But geez who wants to work that hard driving past Sky Harbor on the I-10 looking for all that detail when your supposed to be paying attention to car traffic when driving
