Chief Flight Instructor Ride Alongs

So when they go in front of the DPE and can't spit out aircraft equipment requirements for their "home drome's" airspace because they get so nervous, the DPE is doing it wrong...

Exactly, if he stresses my students out, he won't be used again.

Simple.

Well why don't you cut to the chase and tell us exactly what a chief instructor or DPE should be doing?

Stage Checks and Check Rides

Were you expecting something else?

-----------

It's really just a convoluted form of Anti-Authority, in regards to ride-alongs.

How (in your opinion) should they do them, to do them "correctly"?

There are many ways to do them and I don't care what they do as long as they don't do them while deliberately adding stress.

I said what I dislike, not what I like. I don't have an opinion of what or how they should be done.

Interesting thought. Care to expand?
It is really a self-explanatory thought, I thought so anyway.

By george we need cameras in the cockpits... :sarcasm:

Intent really has nothing do with it. Some people just a REAL sense of test anxiaty. A stage check/ checkride is a big step in any students progresion through training...tis natural reaction to be nervous and stressed.

Far reaching analogy...married men...how many of you where nervous, quesy, anxious, stressed, or otherwise "freaking out" an hour before your wedding? Safe bet that a lot of you felt one of those things above...does that mean that your wife was doing something wrong by not keeping you calm and collected?

Coins have two sides.

Not doing and doing

I used the word "add" stress.
I said nothing about taking away stress, but I do like and favor those DPEs.

not everyone has that natural social talent i'm afraid. Even those that do, can't totally remove the stress of the event some feel.

First I take a middle ground on this. I believe you both have something, the student shouldn't feel overly anxious because they should be properly prepared for them. This might mean mock checks with your instructor to get some practice.

On the other side of it, the FAA guy isn't there to be buddy buddy with you, stage checks have to simulate the FAA ride. This doesn't man the instructor has to "talk down" to the student. But they are not friends either, it is a business meeting that you are conducting to hire an applicant.

Students should show up dressed nicely and the check should be conducted as an informal meeting (student can pose questions). However, I believe those questions should be controlled, don't let the student control the meeting with his/her questions.

On one final note in airplanes, especially in bad situations, we need to trust ourselves and make the decision. A student who is afraid to take command can be guided through by a relaxed stage check exam and fall through the cracks at the FAA because he had a golf date and didn't care how this guy flew. Then this guy goes out and gets in an engine failure while in a shallow turn and dead locks and maybe livens up at the last second to save it and get on the ground but sloppy and dangerous. I believe this failure to make any decision resulted because the only time he/she ever let go was with the safety net of their instructor. Now their instructor isn't their goofing around with them (or their stage examin, or the golfing FAA folk) and they don't know what to do. Flying with a silent instructor who sets you up with good scenarios, especially emergencies, who can really let the student loose and keep them safe in the process. That way you can see a decisive student who in an emergency will at least make a choice.
