Cherokee Training for Private

Hi,

I will hopefully be training for my private here in the near future and went down to the local FBO to check out their rates and such. They quoted me $70 / hr --10 hr blocks in a Piper Cherokee with all the gadgets and comforts plus $30 / hr instructor. How does this compare to other prices out there and does it sound fair?

I'd say if you're in a high cost area it's very fair, have seen higher rates than that for a 152. If you're in a low cost area, it's still a good deal unless it's really a crappy Cherokee. I'm assuming it's a 140, which is the smallest. If it has updated radios and and a VFR GPS, I'd say it's a good deal. A Cherokee is a good plane to learn to fly in. I think easier to land than a Cessna and it will have a roomier cockpit than a 152.
 
Thanks for the inputs. Yes, it's a 140 in good condition with the VFR GPS. I'm in the Orlando area by the way and judging from the other area FBOs it looks like a pretty decent rate. I went up this morning in it and had a blast.
 
That is a good rate . . . I think no matter where you are. I rented two 172s for $70/hr and the instructor for $30/hr and that's the cheapest in the area.

I'm broadening my horizons, and getting checked out in a Cherokee-140 (I've never flown in a low-wing). The closest/cheapest place is about 35mins down the interstate and rents that and a 172 w/ GPS for $75/hr.

That's pretty good too, considering the 172s I rent for $5 less aren't GPS equipped.
