Checkride question

Have any of you folks ever taken a checkride where the examiner passed you, but made you feel like you didn't deserve to pass? I know it is kinda a strange question, but I just finished my initial CFI and that is exactly how he left me feeling.

Well, for the CFI licenses, especially the initial, there is a bunch to know and learn. That he left you feeling this way is probably good, because you realize how much there is to know, and that you are fallible. It also gives you more compassion for students you may have who don't fare well on a checkride.

Since he passed you, he obviously thought that you were competent to act as a flight instructor. If it left you with this much doubt, either he went at it a little too hard, or you're a good instructor who's concerned for his students and your ability to teach, which will make you learn as much as you can in order to be the best you can be.

My two cents.

My comm ride was kinda like that. I didn't really feel all that great before and during the ride, and the ride was on an 'off' day for me... glad I passed it, just one of those things where I knew I could have done a better job.

You can alway surrender your cfi cert and retake the ride

I think it was just a "off" day for me. The oral went really well, and the instructing part of the flight went well, but my flying was just a little off. Within standards, but off. What really got me with the examiner was his saying something like: "Well, you are within standards and I like the way you teach, but I am not impressed." You can see were I would be a little confused.

The bottom line: He passed me. I have the certificate.

Thanks for all the input.

OUCH....Groke a comment like that would like really really bother me. I'm a paramedic.....and I once rode with a more senior medic...and we had a busy shift. But at the end...he told me it was a pleasure working with me, and he commented on me being a good medic.....but he was not impressed. GOD that bothered me !!!!!!!

Congrats on passing... That is what matters. Question, is this DE notorious for thinking he is the •!? I have met some DE's that are really knowledgeable, down to earth and like to pass on their knowledge. I have also met some that think they know everything, like to let you know it and critisize people (can't stand those ones).

You must remember that the initial CFI is the toughest of all of your ratings and certificates. You will have your off days in the air. I feel that what is important is that you performed well on the oral portion.

Good luck with your CFII and MEI...ILS

My PPL DE was like that. Spent the whole time more or less criticizing me or yelling at me. When we finally touch ground, I was damn sure I failed. When he asked for my logbook, I was like "Why?" He's response was, "Well, don't you WANT your private license?" Needless to say that was the first and last time I ever used that DE, and I told all of my friends about to take checkrides about him as well. Hell, I STILL tell people about him. Checkrides are seriously stressful situations, and there's no need to make them downright traumatic. Luckily I've discovered a DE that is not only fair, but also approaches each checkride as an opportunity to teach the student something.
