Checked out -- low-wing

I FINALLY got checked out in a low-wing aircraft. Drove down to Winchester, VA (OKV) after work and got checked out in a Piper Cherokee Cruiser -- PA-28-140.

She felt like a beast when we took off, not climbing so hot, but alright . . . the second time around it seemed better. Definately took some getting used to, sight picture mainly.

I really like landing the airplane. I actually come in with some juice, 40deg of flaps just short of touchdown. I like how the flaps don't seem to balloon the plane like a Skyhawk.

Not as thorough as a checkout as I envisioned, but the guy thought I was a great stick and felt comfortable signing me off, so there we are!

Broadening the horizons.

Question, guys.....what's the maximum takeoff weight in that plane?

The Warrior IIIs we fly actually seem the opposite. When you cut off the power, it flies forever. I kinda like planes that drop like a rock when you cut the power.

Yeah, in my experience when you cut the power on a warrior or archer, you glide fairly well. But when you cut the power on an arrow, that's when you drop like a rock. It's kinda weird going from flying one to flying the other at first, but you get used to it after awhile.

The Cherokee 140's 150's and 180's all have the straight "hershy bar" wing. The Warriors/Archers (All the PA28-151,161,181 etc.) have the tapered wing that is similar to the 172's & 82's. Anyways, the straight wing gives it a slight speed advantage, but when you cut the power it tends to drop faster than the tapered wing. Depending on the model year, some Arrows have the straight wing, newer models have the taper. Ahh the stupid airplane trivia one gets from instructing and working around airplanes for years.

Lee D hit it right on the head. I do have to say though, in general, even Arrow III's will drop MUCH faster than Warrior III's, even though they both have tapered wings. But any of them with the "Hershey Bar" wings will almost fall right out of the sky
