In what context and what type of check ride? In the 135/91k and some 121 worlds you can Unstat an item, suspend the ride, retrain, resume the ride and retest without failing. ( only on recurrent checks) in this sense, an unsatisfactory really doesn't mean much to the world beyond your own training department. if you Unsat that maneuver again though, you fail the ride.
