LOL. One of my favorite moments flying for a major 135 operator that didn't have in house MX was showing up at one of our aircraft and finding an exhausted mechanic, practically weeping because he was so tired. He was visibly distraught from the fatigue and I felt bad for him.

Then I started getting scared because he had been working on the aircraft I was about to fly...

For some reason I was thinking the surgeon got a job flying a Lear. Maybe I'm wrong. His column is okay, but much more entertaining was watching all of the angry letters to the editor when the SJS kids got mad that the old man had "took der jerbs!" :)

Abend isn't that bad. For an AMR pilot, his ego is probably sub-par.
 
I need to start reading Flying Magazine again to see everyone lose their minds as there is a serious push in Congress for privatization of ATC services and (FINALLY) a natural progression towards user fees.

You should read the AOPA magazine for that. The slightest suggestion that a billionaire should pay an extra nickel and they lose their minds.

If I recall correct he did get a job at a South Florida 135 flying a Lear before going to JetSuite. It's not about SJS kids getting mad, it's about taking an entry level job from some one trying to get thier foot in the door. If he wasn't able to buy his time flying his own cabin class twin around he wouldn't have been qualified. He picked his career early in life, he was successful at it and should enjoy his retirement. Not try and play "pilot" all so he can write about it.

I'm not going to begrudge a man who has saved countless lives in his first profession wanting go live out a dream in a second one, so long as he's qualified. And he certainly is. Who cares that he got his time flying his own plane? Jealous much?

Not jealous at all. Really. I have a good job. I guess I get tired of people treating our career as thier hobby. He himself considered buying his own citation to fly around. If you have the means to do that, I feel that you should let a young person have a shot at a job they need to pay the bills. That's all. I'm also in no way begrudging what he did as a doctor. It's very commendable.

I don't understand that attitude. He is qualified. Who cares how old he is, or what is motivations are? Would you be upset if someone were independently wealthy but decided to work for an airline to pass the time? What about someone who marries well, and doesn't have to work, but chooses to? If you follow your logic, a senior Delta captain who doesn't need the money any longer should resign once he has saved up enough for retirement.

As long as he doesn't get a job when he isn't qualified, or worse, takes a job for free, then who cares?

The Delta capt chose his career and stuck to it. I don't begrudge him at all. I can even understand some taking corp gigs after the airline. For people that don't need to work, taking a spot in line from some one who does is what I just don't get. I think it's a selfish decision to do that. Also, these types may not take jobs for free (some have though) but some times thier motivation to better their quality of life or pay might not be as strong as some one who needs it. After all, they get to fly, so it's all good. We've all heard stories about these guys in the corp world and to some extent the 121 game. I do get what you're saying though. It's just some thing that rubs me the wrong way and that's probably my fault. (Note: no one has taken my job to make me feel this way).

I hear ya, but we only get one chance at life, and if you've always wanted to do something it would be really silly to not do it just because someone else wants the job. As long as they are qualified and get paid for the work, I don't fault anyone for following their dreams. Many of the career changer types struggle in training, so chances are they won't be taking up a spot anyway.

I really do get what your saying. If I had the means to fly my own turbojet/prop around and be retired, I'd do it right now. I just don't get the need to play pilot when you can afford to go where you when you want. To me the flying would be even more rewarding having the ability to go any where you want, not have to go where some one is telling you to go. That's all.

Not at all. It doesn't bug enough to write an email. I don't think any thing has ever bugged me enough to write directly to the person. Just simple observations, while sippin on some Jameson and sitting on the couch. :)
 
If you want job security, do something other people don't want to do. I've met career changers who suck. sure. I've met those who don't, too. It's an open market. If you're dissatisfied with the competition, take THEIR job. If you're not, be better than they are at your chosen Profession. *shrug*

You'd have to find the issues from right after it happened. Can't remember how long ago it was. Maybe a couple years. They got so many sniveling whiners writing in about it that the editor in chief actually wrote about it in his column.
