Change of squawk code after landing

After doing practice approaches our tower usually tells us to squawk VFR. If they forget i usually remember. This brings up a good point. If you rent a plane, be sure to check the x-ponder code before you take off!

It's on the checklist but in our planes, 9 times out of 10 we use 1200. Every once an a while some one will forget to change it back.

I was flying in a DA40 where some one had squawked 7600 because they did not know how to turn the volume up on the radio (why where they allowed to rent this plane by them selves, i don't know). They ended up calling up the tower on their cell phone and getting their clearance that way. Well they forgot to switch the squawk and i took off. About 1000 feet agl on a right turn out the tower got on the radio and said, "DiamondStar 7HR, center just called in and said to be on the look out for a lost coms aircraft in your area."

I was looking every where for traffic. then i looked down at the squawk code, got on the radio, apologized and switch back to 1200.

it was sort of embarrassing.
