Chances of Getting Hired

I have 1,000TT/100ME, C/ME/I, but no CFI ratings or jet training. Do I have a realistic chance of getting hired by a regional? At the last "open house" I attended, 99% of the applicants were CFIs.

Thanks.

Re: Republic Hires 430 Hr Pilot!

Ahh, let's go ahead and create a new post out of this one. :)

You probably would get a call from ASA.

You'd probably be one of the higher time interviewees at most any regional. Most companies, including mine (ExpressJet), can't find enough pilots these days to the point that they- the companies themselves- are offering incentives and promotions, etc. Eagle- guaranteed base of your choice, Peanuckle- I think $1000 for a current pilot who refers someone, and to the trainee- $400/wk during training...probably more than you'd make as an actual FO over there on 1st yr pay. XJT is so short right now we've started having some cancellations due to lack of crews and the Company is offering, thru mid June right now, 150% of your hourly pay rate to pick up unassigned trips.

Your chances of getting hired are the best they have ever been in the last 7 years. Most regionals are more understaffed than normal.

You could've gotten hired 500 hrs ago. With those times, you can get hired by one of the GOOD regionals.

I walked away from the computer in a severe state of wonder...then walked back and just had to sign in and post....

Ummm....I work with a guy who finished expressjet training like a month or even longer ago and he still has not been called to fly. So how can they be cancelling flights because of a lack of crews in this situation?

Express has got bases all over the place and if an FO is ready to fly in Newark it doesn't help much for the Ontario base eh?

JetBlue shut down an entire fleet type for a few days because all their crews that had not dutied out were out of position.

Ok, maybe its just me, but they are in the 500 mph transportation business, they do have lots of agreements with hotels, would seem weird to be cancelling flights with a situation like that.

What part of Canada are you from Jtrain?

The problem is when you have guys on the west coast call in sick and all your reserves are already covering open time. So what's that mean? It means the guys that are in Newark (who are three time zones away, mind you) are already out flying and covering the open time and sick time in THEIR base. You simply can't move guys fast enough 2,000 miles across the country. Even at 500 MPH, that's a 4 hour flight. By the time they get to the west coast they're hosed.

We are so short, we have double time in place for all open time and JRA. Arent you guys having problems getting guys into the EMB sim? I knoiw I saw some XJT guys in PHX for the sim, hitting shifts from 10pm-5am. I know our guys getting out of ground school have a moth or more wait to get into the sim....

Send your resume to XJT, or fill out the online form, or whatever it is they're having applicants do now. Do it yesterday.

PM me with any questions!

Yes, it is possible. I'm a prime example. 1000/100 in my book and no instructor ratings. I was an A&P with a major carrier and never had an actual flying job and was turned away from a few regionals like eagle because I was never employed as a pilot. In the end, I ended up with 3 separate offers from regionals that all had the same class date. I chose Xjet and never regretted it. I'm in training now.:nana2: Study hard, be prepared, and don't give up.

Is he completely done w/ training (including IOE)? I ask b/c I know someone at expressjet that had 6 weeks off before he was called for IOE... that was due to a shortage of IOE captains.

As far as the original question, I'd say it depends on where you're interviewing. Some companies just seem to prefer CFI's. When I interviewed at Mesaba a few months back, I think only two of us got hired (out of five). I had the lowest time by far, but the ones that didn't get hired weren't ever CFIs, and from talking to them afterward, it seemed like they were either a) asked tougher questions, or b) asked the same questions, but dug themselves into a hole b/c they answered the question they thought they heard.

They were also asked the question of "so what makes you think you can make it through training?" I was never asked that question, even though I was the youngest (by a lot actually, 24 at the time) of the group, and possibly had the lowest time of anyone they had interviewed in the last 10+ years at that point. Oh, and I didn't have any "jet course" or preferential hiring mins.

Now in my class of 26 people, I think at least 24 were CFIs at some point.

I don't mean to make it sound like you're SOL, because you're not. I'm just pointing out that even though there is a "shortage" doesn't mean it's going to be a cakewalk just because you have 1000/100. There are certain things about flight instructing that some companies like a lot, you just have to convince them that you're just as qualified.

chances are great, 500 more hours and you can get hired as capt with mesa, the regionals are hurting that bad.
