CFIs in PHX area.

Big Black Guy
I have heard gruesome things about the practice area in north Phoenix. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a head up on the “boundaries” of the practice area, and why does it have such a bad rap?

Thanks in advance.

You have Cessna's, Archers, and Seminoles all over the place on top of F-16s zipping around. Plus alot of pilots are making position reports off of landmarks that are not on the TAC. I wish they would use a radial and DME off of PHX VOR.

I still say South is worse though.

Does anyone currently instruct in the PHX area at the moment?

Yup.

And is response to Kristie's comment, watch out for the gliders all over! Not only up north, but southwest by estrella gliderport, and especially enroute to Tucson there are a ton of gliders. An even worse thing about them is most operate without transponders or even complete electrical systems, so our planes with TCAS and TIS don't even pick them up. Gotta keep your eyes open!

Sounds like I'm going to have a good old time.

Thanks for the heads up.

BTW, who do you instruct for (if you care to divulge)

Taught in PHX for 5 years. kinda stuck in the southern pratice areas out past AJ. Too many pan am'ers in the nothern areas. Plus flying out of FFZ its a clear shot to the southeast.
