cfi\'s and future cfi\'s alike

to all of you cfi's and future cfi's (like myself)
we are in the wrong business. you can teach someone to drive a car and make ..are you sitting down... $17.50 per hour. never scream right rudder again never say centerline again never count another touch and go ..never crap your pants again.

how strange this world works .. driving in a car with airbags on the ground wrapped in metal making left and right turns. making more than a guy who puts his life on the line every time he climbs in to the right seat of a plane .... not only his life but quite possibly many lives on the ground..its a conspiracy.. am i the only one that sees the irony in this....

Yeah, but driving a car won't give you hours in your logbook.

Yeah, but how many people who are driving instructors enjoy their job? I know what you are saying about the whole pay thing, it is kinda back @sswards, but that's the world we live in. NOT to start another PFT thing here, but I'd rather do CFI work for free than make $17.50 an hour teaching a bunch of 15/16 yr olds how to drive. Just my .02

I think it's ironic that I've spent easily $50,000 on qualifications that will get me a job making less than a 7-11 employee. But hey, that's life.

The other strange thing: a 17 year with forty some odd hours in an airplane (with a PPL, of course) can go anywhere in the U.S. and rent an airplane. However, that same 17 year old will be turned down by every car rental place out there... it's too dangerous to let people operate a motor vehicle and all. Heck, I'm 23 and still struggle finding places that will rent a car to me... unless I through down a lot more cash

Primarily when a CFI gets paid $18/hr, there's another yahoo next door that says, "Ingrate! I'll do it for $15/hr! Hours hours hours, gimme gimme gimme!"

And that is why CFIs are underpaid. Cause there is always someone who deosn't care about getting paid little and thats who the comapnies wants.

Nothing at all, I was 15 once...and it wasn't too terribly long ago. I didn't have to go for a "check-drive" with an examiner cause I took driver's ed at my high school. I was at the DMV on Sunday getting a new license, mine was about to expire, and I saw the driver's examiner come back in from a check-out with a young girl. The examiner lady looked so incredibly dissatisfied with her job it was ridiculous. She just kind of drug herself in the door and after big sigh she called out the next name and she was gone again. I felt kinda bad for her, but there are much worse jobs out there. Have fun Brian, try to cheer up your examiner by doing donuts in the parking lot. Do something creative to enlighten their day, you can always retake your check ride if they fail you.

I'm 20, can teach people how to fly, go serve in the military, etc...but I can't have a beer or play the lotto in AZ. Stupid government.

I took a short vacation to see Kristie while I was a CFI. Before I was out of the door, one of our more umm, "uncouth" CFI's was in the chief pilots office demanding my multi-students, who were also taking a few days off as well to see their families.

You gotta watch your back in this industry. I trust almost every CFI where I work, but there's one or two who have tried to put their hands in my cookie jar.

I don't know about you but as a CFII/MEI, I feel safer teaching someone to fly than drive. In addition to being a pilot, I also drive tractor trailers and taught truck driving school. I have sat in a 40 ton missle being "guided" down the road with no second set of driver controls. At anytime the student could freak out and turns us over, or worse yet, not stop in time and crush a car.

I'll take the air anyday of the week, I just won't do it for free!

I agree with flyifrvfr... Your dad's on the job, right? He should be able to tell you about how dangerous driving can be. I think it makes flying pale in comparison, as your decision-making process in the air doesn't involve so many mitigating factors.

This is not to say that flying is not challenging. Just trying to point out how many more crazy drivers there are out there...

I tried to rent a car in SLC and was turned down by one company, the one I actually got the car from charged nearly twice as much because I'm 23. I can rent and teach in airplanes all i want, but can't rent a car.

It gets easier to rent a car once you have a major credit card. I can't see the logic behind this as most rental car values exceed the majority credit limits. Go figure!

P.S.
I know the argument is if you have a credit card, you are a responsible individual. I just don't agree with that. If they could only see the things I bought with my credit card, they would be amazed, no, shocked...

Even with a credit card they still don't like to rent to you unless you're over 25. When we went out to SLC for the JC ski trip, I rented a car and was charged an extra $10/day because I am under 25. (I was 21 at the time) and I had a major credit card to my name. Go figure...
