CFII Initial

FLIPY FLAPS!
I'm thinking about doing my CFII as my initial. I know Ollie talked about this recently, but I figured I'd get some feedback from the group. Is it all a fairly straight forward process?

Straight-forward right out of the PTS.

You are aware that the double-eye without a single-or multi eye rating won't be able to instruct in an aircraft, right?

If you really like and very well know instrument flying, then go ahead and do the II as the initial. I went this route and had a great time with it. With your experience, I don't believe you'd have a problem with it. Good luck!!

Straight forward, but nearly worthless on its own. You will be limited to ground school and simulator/FTD training. No airplanes.

I did my CFII as the initial. it really doesn't matter what you do first. yes CFII is useless on its own, but the thing is, is that most places won't hire you with just a CFI either. everone wants CFI and CFII at least.

Key words here.

It really is about pairing your strongest footings.

Either route will be about the same.

Since you are looking for a part time gig, the places looking to hire you shouldn't care that you have one or two instructor ratings. It is typically the academies and pilot mills that care.

Where does it say that in the FARs? Under privileges 61.193 it says you can instruct to train for an instrument rating? Is it in the CFII PTS?

61.195(c)

...must hold an instrument rating on his or her pilot certificate

check

...and flight instructor certificate that is appropriate to the category and class of aircraft used for the training provided.

No bueno there. A CFII certificate alone is just that. You would neither have a CFI-A nor an MEI so no category and class.

It's still not a bad idea though. Add ons are much less involved from my experience.

As was posted, its in 61.195, and its a recent change at that. I knew guys who would just have a CFII, and go do instrument instruction in a multi to get multi time.

didn't mention the FARS... what im saying is how many flight schools can you go to now with JUST a CFII or CFI and get hired? most everyone wants at least CFI/CFII.
