Has anyone here renewed their CFI via presentation to the FSDO inspector a recoord showing an 80% pass rate on first time checkride attempts? If so, what is acceptable proof of this pass rate? Keep in mind I instructed at a Part 61 flight school. So any records would be my own.

[/ QUOTE ]Keep in mind that 61.189(b) tells us what kind of record to keep

==============================
A flight instructor must maintain a record in a logbook or a separate document that contains...
The name of each person that instructor has endorsed for a knowledge test or practical test, and the record shall also indicate the kind of test, the date, and the results.

I just renewed mine on the same basis (Activity). All I presented to the FSDO was a typed piece of paper with the names, dates, Checkride type and results on it with my signature at the bottom and they "cheerfully" inked me a temporary CFI Certificate! Thats it!

...anyone have any experience renewing several months before you need to? Can you do this? Or do you have to wait until your CFI license is about to expire?

Well, you can renew your CFI as early as three months before the end of the expiration month, and still keep your original expiration month. If you have more than three months to go, I'd say just call up the FSDO that you plan to do it at and ask them. You have to make an appointment to go into a FSDO anyways.
