you should be able to find a lot of responses to this question with a search for FIRC or CFI renewal. You'll see a few go with AF, AOPA and others. Personally I like AF for the 1 time fee lifetime of renewal.
It takes a day or two to complete and then submit. You will eventually receive an updated certificate from the FAA with your new exp. date after you submit the required information

AF is one of the many ways to go. AF is a one time fee where everyone else you have to pay for every renewal. Some people have done Gleim and prefer it over AF but AF does have that nice registered for life thing.
It really depends on who you prefer to use and what type of money you want to spend on it.
As far as endorsements there is no such thing as a "self endorsement". The endorsement will be given to you after you complete the program you choose.You will also need to submit some paperwork to the FAA that includes an 8710, your endorsement, and your completion certificate.

I just finished the AF FIRC today... it was pretty straightforward... a good review of the important info that all CFI's should be familiar with. It also introduced some good information about some of the FAA's new training programs also. It has 8 sections, which require you to "study" (be logged in) for 100 minutes per section, and are followed by a 10 question test (70 percent passing grade required). I liked it... the one time fee is great... make an appointment with your local FSDO a week in advance of your course completion date to avoid the fee for the ACR service, unless your very close to your expiration date... good luck!

I did AF back in January and it worked well for me. I plan on using it again in 2012

I have been renewing using the Gleim course. Very organized and simple to do online. You dont need a logbook entry. You just take your paperwork into the FSDO and your all set.
