CFI Renewal

Just wanted to get some different opinions on renewing my CFI certificate. I will have to either take an on-line course or go to like an American Flyers program. I just wanted to know what experience people have had with either and what is recommended as the most convenient and less hassle.

American Flyers online...completely worth it. Do a search of the threads here too...there's plenty.

Just renewed mine via the AF online (100 for the lifetime FIRC) + 50 for paperwork if you dont have a FSDO near you.

Def. worth it and is very very easy and user friendly.

AF online is a good way to go.

I have a question:
My CFI was up in July, so I did AF online in May. When I got my new FAA CFI card in the mail it stated an expiration in May. I thought that if I did the CFI renewal within the 3 calendar months, I could keep the same expiration month. Now it seems like I have to do my CFI renewal in May-2 months sooner than before (which was July).
Anyone know how this works and what went wrong?

The AF course is good. I was surprised at the information contained in it, and I actually learned something going through the course. Also, never having to pay for it again is good.

Contact whoever at AF and let them know your situation. I'm sure with a phone call they could get it fixed if it matters that much to you.

125 now for the AF course. Just started it today. Lots of good info so far. I would recommend it.

Has anyone done the AmericanFlyers CFI Renewal On-Line course recently? I have read some other info that one of the disadvantages of the AF program is that the pages or modules have "timers" on them that require you to spend a set amount of time on each module before you can take the test. Others have said that this is not true anymore, and/or there is a way around these timers. I'm not really interested in breezing through the content just to take the test, but, OTOH, if I have gone through a section adequately, I am not necessarily keen on having to wait for a timer to run out before I can take the test. Anyone care to share any recent experiences with this AF CFI Renewal Course?

No idea about the timer, but doesnt it seem a little ridiculous for AF to charge $50 to file the paperwork for you. Does that $50 get them to file the paperwork each time you renew, or will you have to pay $50 each time you renew. Seems to me that the $50 per renewal might mitigate savings of lifetime classes after 2 renewals. Anyone have any thoughts?

The AF course still has the timer. It keeps running as long as the page is open and the screen saver doesn't kick in.

$50 for the paperwork is a little high, but all online courses that I'm familiar with charge a similiar fee for that service.

I'm currently in the middle of the Gleim FIRC and so far no complaints. I picked it based on a friends recommendation and I'll probably use it again. It's easy and there's no timer. If I were instructing or planning on in the near future I would probably take it more seriously, but as far as I'm concerned, it's just a hoop I have to jump through to keep my tickets. I know that the AF is for life, but I don't think $100 every couple of years is a big deal.

Nope not at all. I went to the OAK FSDO this morning and traded the plastic for the new paper one with no issues
