CFI renewal timing?

Don't let it expire! It's way too easy to renew every 2 yrs with online courses and you just never know. I haven't used mine in 30 yrs but I still renew. Why? Who knows.....guess it was hard enough to get it the first time around that it's one of those ratings I'm most proud of.

Gleim lets you renew 4 months before your expiration date and keep your original expiration date. You could easily work on it a little at a time till your finished over the next 6 wks. I can do the whole renewal on a short weekend.

I'm working on reinstating my expired CFI/I - what was your checkride like?

Oral: lasted 2 hours
Asked questions about what endorsements were needed
asked about how instrument gauges worked
How to conduct an IPC(its in the PTS)
Had to do a lesson plan on Holds
Went over mx logs of airplane. Showed him engine/airframe sign off, 100 hr, pitot static, ELT/Battery, etc

Flight:
flew 1.2 hours

took off and threw on the hood. Went direct to a VOR and held. I flew the plane and instructed on how to do the hold under the hood. Did 2 laps around the VOR then shot a VOR approach off that same VOR partial panel. Then published missed approach which takes you back to the VOR to hold again. Did that. Then did unusual attitude recovery, partial panel flying. Then finally ILS to finish. Threw a short approach at me last minute. Nailed it.

Having said that, he knew I was getting back to instructing after 10 years at a regional. So he knew I was bringing lots of knowledge with me, as well as being rusty on teaching students. Each examiner will give you a different ride and treat you differently based on your experience level and attitude. Ask around, see who's recommended by other guys. Where are you located?

I've been out of the game for about 5 years flying a desk and working on a masters degree. Redoing all my lectures now and flying with a buddy on the weekends to get comfortable again. Once I get the lectures stuff out of the way I'll get a CFI/I to bring me up to speed. I'm in the northern Illinois region/Chicagoland. Seems pretty straight forward and per the PTS table. Although my mileage may vary. Thanks for getting back to me.

Just did my CFI renewal in less than 3 hours! I guess AF changed their program so you don't have to spend a certain number of minutes on each page. Plus you can open the quiz in a new tab so that you can reference the material.
