CFI Record question

Ok I need everyones thoughts on this one.

FAR Pt61.189 Flight Instructor records: we must keep a record for solo flight privileges we sign off.

My question is does this include only the initial solo endorsement or any solo endoresement like the 90 day one, or the airport within 25nm one.???

The requirement is you only keep a record of initial solo privileges..so I take that as the first time you endorse a student pilot for solo.

ok and I assume this will include the 90 day ones when you pick up another student that has already solo'd

also, what type of ways does everyone use to keep this record? I have been using a excel spreadsheet

I don't think you would need to record an additional 90 day endorsement, I think it's more of a record for that you were the first one to authorize this person for solo flight and you were the one who gave them the necessary training etc.

I've asked some other CFIs and sounds like people like to use an excel document on something like Google Drive so it can be accessed anywhere and is available in the cloud.

For independent work I'd just make a note of it in my logbook and take a photo of it. At the flight school, I would do all the above and photo copy it for the student's file.

I don't see anything in

==============================
(1) The name of each person whose logbook or student pilot certificate that instructor has endorsed for solo flight privileges, and the date of the endorsement; and
==============================

that excludes a solo endorsement just because there was one given earlier.

I think this works. used to keep a chart in my logbook, but then started recording them in an eLog.

So you're suggesting to record anyone you sign off for solo privileges regardless of it's initial vs a 90 day?

I take a picture of it with my phone. Because I'm lazy.

I am kind of curious about this question too, though. I guess it can't hurt to keep track of anything and everything either way.

I would record everything in a file for the students. I even had a log of flights in there because students seem to always lose or destroy their logbooks.

I have a spreadsheet that I keep tabs of my solo signoffs, checkride, and written endorsements. It keeps tabs of the #, pass rate, avg written score, and if i'm elligible for a gold seal and renewal.

I put all solo endorsements in it, initial, 90day, and to act as PIC (solo) for the multi. I figured you can get in hot water for not keeping record, but you'll be OK if you keep tabs on almost everything.

Basically what I do. Every student has a training record. I keep track of what we covered each lesson.

Another CFI I know had a student break an airplane during solo practice and got a visit from the FAA, they wanted to see clear documentation showing that the student had received dual instruction on botched landings. When he showed it they were happy and left him alone. The inspector told him the best thing he can do to protect himself is to have good documentation about what he's taught.

I also keep a separate "Endorsement Log" in Excel. Just date, student, endorsement, results. Super easy to maintain.
