CFI Program Closing

DPEs can't make as much money in a given day when they have a CFI initial ride. They can only usually do that check ride that day because it takes up a lot of time. Therefore I know of a few that don't really like doing them. But I'm sure that is not true of all. And I've also noticed that ATP has a really hard time keeping instructors for more than 2 years for whatever reason. They may simply not have the staff for it.

ATP didn't change this month''s Flying magazine ad. They are still showing the full program. Guess it went to print too early

I did the CFI program at American Flyers, if you can devote the time it is worth it. Flyers actually teaches you how to teach. You get at least 4 hours a day classroom time with an instructor every day for 30 days. Its a great program and you can also do your CFII in house part 141 which is another great deal. Not to mention you might meet a movie star or 2. I met Ewan Mcgregor there back in 2008 when i took the course, really nice guy!

I was interested, as I'd been strongly considering ATP. However, I just looked at lodging prices around there. How on earth does anyone afford to do that academy? The cheapest place I found was $3k (!) for a month.

Yeah its a VERY EXPENSIVE area. If your getting a loan you can finance the logging into the loan. Not the best idea but it is an option. I went with a friend of mine, we stayed at the Ocean Park Hotel. Its not great its like a dorm room style hotel. Shared bathrooms, private rooms. I think it was $400 a week back in 2008 you would have to call for rates now of course. A few of the other guys in the class found a room for rent in the area for the month on Craigslist.

OMG - They actually teach you how to teach?

This is wrong. The PTS does not differentiate between DPEs and FAA inspectors. Standards and requirements are the same, though any examiner, regardless of whether they are DPE or FAA inspector, may test beyond the minimum PTS tasks during the oral or ground portion, or both.
Don't mean to argue but I got this directly from an Inspector at the Van Nuys FSDO. He said, DPE's still have discretion to adhere to only the tasks outlined in the PTS but FAA inspectors have been instructed to do all tasks for all CFI Initials.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to just do whats in the PTS or a hair above the minimum PTS req, but ALL would be a PITA to be sure. Can I do it? Yes of course. Do I want to if I don't have to? Nope.

and as to using a DPE at Sheble's, I am going to take the advice of some folks who are sorta in the know and just stay away from Sheble's and hope that they get the mess sorted out.
