CFI needed in Houston (short term)

Student pilot looking for a flight instructor in the Houston area.

You must:

1. have an open schedule
2. be a fast paced instructor. I am a member of Mensa and quickly become proficient in everything I apply myself to. I find it very frustrating to learn faster than someone is able to teach and I will not place myself in this situation.
3. feel comfortable instructing in a high performance, complex aircraft.

My plan is to find an instructor with a compatible personality. I will fly you (commercially) to Virginia to pick up my airplane (possibly around the 25th of this month). We will fly my plane back to Houston together. Once we get back to the Houston area- I plan to dedicate my full attention to being signed off to solo. I want to fly every day wx permits until we reach that goal. (hopefully no more than 3 weeks) This is a very optimistic goal and will require 100% dedication from you as well.

Compensation is to be negotiated.

Excuse me if that part came off a bit arrogant. :)

The idea I was attempting to get across is simply that I want to find a CFI who's instruction style is well suited to my learning style .... which is good advice for anyone.

Throw out the idea that you are some kind of genius. Because to be honest I don't care how smart you are your not going to outgrow your instructor in a couple hours up to your solo.

What type of airplane are you planning on flying?
 
I have a very close friend who is one of the best pilots I know, he is also one of the most idiotic, dumbass people I have ever met. So being smart really doesn't make you a great pilot, or give you the ability to "catch on quick".

But if the weather is good, 3 weeks is not too far fetched. I soloed in three weeks and I had to google to find out what the hell "Mensa" was... So it must be easy.

Edit: By the way, what kind of plane? I live in Houston...

I wasn't trying to be rude...but this attitude is why Bonanzas (and now Cirri) kill doctors.

Guys- sorry if I came off like a dick there. Again, let me reiterate that I just want to find an instructor who has a personality compatible with mine. I worded that sentence poorly.
 
Jees guys give him a break. This post is not really any different than FSI's post. He stated his needs and that was that. It also does not mean that he cannot catch on quickly as well. I am not sure if he posted on any other site, but he is here giving one of us a chance.

Man, please tell me you don't go throwing stuff like that around in real life. You must be a lonely man if you do.

I remember getting into Mensa as part of some G&T thing when I was a kid... got the little card or whatever in the mail, lost it about a week later, and haven't thought about it until now. Hmm.


Anyway, an overpowered brain will do less for your learning to become a capable pilot than a solid sense of humility. Kudos for looking for a good CFI, especially here, but you'll drive most of them off if you waltz around saying things like that to them. I know I'd rather instruct a hundred blue collar nobodies in a rusty Tomahawk than a guy who sounds like he's proclaiming himself to be God's gift to aviation before he's even gotten behind the stick of his shiny new glass cockpit composite whatever. Perhaps you'd consider rewording it as:

2. be a fast paced instructor. I'm enthusiastic about learning and tend to pick up things quickly. I need an instructor who's willing to move at my pace; I enjoy taking things on at a more serious level than the typical student.

Still ambitious, but without the pedestal.

A friend of mine from school. Very competent instructor with lots of experience teaching in high-performance, complex, and technologically advanced aircraft. He teaches in half and whole days and as far as I know does his independent thing full time so availability would be very good.

Welcome to Jet Careers:D Don't worry about these guys Ted, they're like this to everyone. Its always amazing what anonymity can do for the ego. I'm sure someone will PM you there are several Houston based CFIs on here

And if you think I've got an ego problem, go ahead and try dropping the above-mentioned line in conversation somewhere, anywhere, and watch the reaction. Like I said, I applaud his decision to come here and will gladly admit that it's difficult to judge someone's personality well via a single post on a forum -- but that's what you get when you make an over the top comment like that.

I'm ready to let the guy go about his business and learn to fly a plane if you are.

No harm no foul mijo, you're one of the few. I read it pretty simply.... He's smart, he learns fast and he want a CFI that can challenge him, nothing more nothing less. There was no need to go off on the guy.

I would suggest a trip to your local FBO and talk to some of the CFI's there. Ask how many hours they have, it will come up with your insurance company if your aircraft is high perf and complex. Ask if they have any plans to move on, this is a problem for many students.

It would be best to approach this with a humble state of mind, aviation is one field that you will never stop learning.

A student pilot in my opinion does not belong in a high performance, complex aircraft. Ticking time bomb comes to mind. Learn the basics by renting a 152 or 172 and then the transition up will be much easier. You have to build a foundation before you can build the house. What kind of airplane are we talking about?

Many smart people have made many stupid mistakes and the worst thing you could do is say to yourself, 'That won't happen to me.'

+1 - there's certainly no reason you CAN'T solo in a complex, many have done it, but there may be issues with insurance. Plus it's going to take you longer, and it will put a lot of unnecessary beatings on your airplane. The extra demands of knowing all the more complex systems, as well as trying to keep a big 6 happy while doing pattern work and maneuvers, will add a great deal of time and distractions. Also consider that on your checkride, the examiner will (rightly) make it really, really tough on you if you show up in a Bo, Cirrus or Mooney (not sure what you're getting, so I'll guess Big 3).
Certainly keep working to find a good CFI who's insurable on your airplane, but I'd seriously consider doing the bulk of your training in someone else's trainer. You can still use your airplane for cross country and night work during training.
My third comment - you'll probably want more of a long term relationship than you think - one of the biggest killers of new pilots with fast airplanes is going too far, too fast and getting into weather they can't handle. If you want to travel, you'll want to consider bringing your CFI with you on trips (Think JFK Jr). This may even apply after you get your instrument rating - actually this is a GREAT way to do real world training for the IR.
Fourth, my standard unsolicited advice to brilliant, high net worth individuals who want to fly - ALWAYS be aware that the very Type1 personality traits that allow you to be in a position to own an aircraft may be the ones that will bite you if you don't leave them at home, or at least lock them out of the airplane.

I am absolutely amazed with the amount of response I have had to this post. So many people have sent me messages or called. I have really enjoyed speaking with everyone. It is going to be a tough bunch to choose only one out of !!

Heh... it's just as good of a time to be shopping for a CFI right now as it is to be shopping for a house. Your timing couldn't be better.
