CFI initial

displaced Texan
Okay so here's the deal...I've been planning on moving back to Texas for awhile now and was actually planning on leaving today. I was trying to finish everything up in June, one of those things being my CFI checkride. Well I finally got my big chance last week, got nervous, and messed up halfway through the flight part.

Now I know that I have sixty days just to finish this up without having to do the oral, and some parts of the flight, all over again. The guy can't get back to me until sometime next week, but this has already been a long and drawn out process and I would really rather just move on with things and finish up out there. So my question is this...If I decided to move now obviously I would have to find a new instructor and get additional training to get signed off for the test, but would a different FSDO honor that notice of disapproval and just make me finish up? Or would I have to do the test all over again?

if you past the 60 day you're going to have to do it all over again. I'm sure the FSDO ain't going to do any favor, since the expiration date is in the FAA system. But if you have a disapproval it is up to the examiner, but they should honor it and allow you to finish it up.

They should be able to just cover the items you haven't completed yet, but don't be surprised if they want to redo some things on the ground.

Most if not all of the time, if you switch examiners, you can expect to do the whole thing over again. I don't know of any examiners that would put their signature on your temporary without having any doubt about your abilities. Just finish it, it will all come back to you on the re-check.:D

Good luck! I would not wish the stress I had going into that FSDO ride on my worst enemy.

I do agree not to expect any favors from the FSDO, but I would think that letter will smooth things along.

It would be best to finish it here, but I'm just trying to get out there ASAP to get some things straightened out before classes start in august.

I talked to a rep at the San Antonio FSDO and she said that an examiner would more than likely not make me retake the whole test, but may want to go over a good bit on the ground, the point being she said it would not be that big of a deal. I also found a school in San Marcos that has a PA28R-180, which is what I've been used to flying here.

decisions, decisions....

The examiner, whether that be an FAA Inspector of a Designated Pilot Examiner, has to test those areas that were not completed satisfactorily and the option of testing none, some, or all of those areas that were completed satisfactorily. What will happen is anyone's guess, but as a very general rule of thumb, the better first impression you make on the examiner, the less likely you are to be retested on areas already completed successfully.

Whatever you do, do not become discouraged. The initial flight instructor practical test is unlike any other test in aviation.

A practical test is a practical test. Unfortunately, 61.39 (e): "...within 60 days." For my IR, I was bitten by check-ride-itis and got the coveted (sarcasm) Notice of Disapproval after brain f$^ting and straying out of the hold. Weather, schedules (mine and the DPE's), and life kept putting the retest on hold. Finally on the day, he reviewed the paperwork and told me "Sorry. It's been 61 days." Nothing I could do at that point.

Moral: Don't let 60 days elapse. Finish the checkride or start again. Good luck!

ps: I reapplied for the ride and passed.

I would encourage you to stay with the instructor, plane, and examiner that you started with. When I was going through my commercial multi trainingg the shcool went bankrupt and shut it's doors. So I had no choice but to go find another instructor, plane, and oh yeah move to a different town. It was a big distraction so if you can just finish up where you are at sticking around an extra week will probably save you a lot of frustration, time and money in the end.

:yeahthat:

If you switch examiners on a CFI initial you can count on doing it all over again. Seen it enough times now.

Finish with the same guy if you can, or think of it as a fresh start with the new examiner.

Staying here a few extra days sounds like the most logical and easy choice...I just hope nothing happens between now and then to push that back even more.
