CFI FOI Endorsement

Hey Guys,

A quick question about the FOI endorsement:

61.183(d) Receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor on the fundamentals of instructing listed in §61.185 of this part appropriate to the required knowledge test;

I already hold an Advanced/Instrument Ground Instructor Certificate. Obviously I passed the knowledge test (and won't be required to again), and it did not require an endorsement to take the exam.

What is the purpose of this endorsement, and do I need it?

It does not look like you need the endorsement if you already have a ground instructor certificate. according to 61.183 (d) receive a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor on the fundamentals of instructing listed in 61.185 of this part appropriate to the required knowledge test.

So it seems to specify in the regs that the only reason why you would need the endorsement is to take the test which you do not need.

I never realized that ground instructor applicants are required to take what looks like the same FOI test, but there is no endorsement required by 61.213

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that you did not need an endorsement for the initial CFI written exams, and that the endorsement would only be necessary if the applicant did not pass the test on the first time.

Sec. 61.49

Retesting after failure.

(a) An applicant for a knowledge or practical test who fails that test may reapply for the test only after the applicant has received:
(1) The necessary training from an authorized instructor who has determined that the applicant is proficient to pass the test; and
(2) An endorsement from an authorized instructor who gave the applicant the additional training.

Like tgrayson said, the endorsement is for the practical test, not the knowledge.
