I am so stupid.

I randomly had a thought about when I needed to renew my CFI. Looked at my certificate. September of 2023.

I haven’t used my CFI since 2010, but always kept it because it was easy enough to do and I thought I’d like to one day teach my kids, if they want.

Is it worth doing the work or am I being stupid(er)?

Time vs reward. Is studying and gettig yourself ready for that checkride again worth having the active piece of plastic in your pocket?

Knock on wood may I never forget my date. Just FIRC’d last month myself.

Starting this December you get a three month grace period. If you want to get it back you'll have to take a checkride. I would think the II would be easiest for any pro pilot.

I wouldn’t worry about it at this point. If you ever need it, just take the check ride again. I contemplate letting mines expire every two years.

There have been some recent changes that may help (or hurt) you:

Also, if working for a 135 or 121 operator, check with your POI as there maybe another angle they can help you with. Next line check, or working in the training department, etc.

Thanks for this. I just renewed in Sept and had not heard of this change.

Removing the date and calling it recent experience vs renewal but not changing any requirements seems on par for a government program.

It seems that one of the driving forces was the printing costs of 131,000 certificates every two years.

I asked if just replacing the cert on 1 Dec would remove the expiry, they said no/not yet.

Looks like I’ll have to renew out of cycle. Just trying to avoid the next issue from Jan 25.

Yeah, I get it. My son is just now getting an inkling to get his PPL. I haven’t instructed an initial student in 5 years. I’m acutely aware of my lack of recent experience even though I’m fresh in the Feds eyes.
