CFI currency

I assume a CFI needs to be current in cat/ class takeoffs and landings to teach a student, but what about a non-night current cfi teaching a commercial guy at night?

FAR 61.57
Night takeoff and landing experience. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise, unless within the preceding 90 days that person has made at least three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise, and—

(i) That person acted as sole manipulator of the flight controls; and

(ii) The required takeoffs and landings were performed in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required).

Since The FAA considers a CFI to be the PIC... I would think you must be night current in order to give any person instruction at night, even if the person getting the instruction may be night current...

Make sense?

I've had this come up on me before, and I just showed up a bit early and took the plane up for my three landings, then went on the flight.

[/ QUOTE ]If the "student" may and does take on the role of pilot in command for the flight, the CFI doesn't require =any= currency. Heck, he doesn't even need a medical certificate.

So, in your example, if the commercial student is current (including night currency), has the qualifications to act as PIC in the airplane, and does take on the role of PIC, the CFI does not have to be current in anything, let alone night takeoffs and landings.

What if you are still night current, and you go with a student pilot for night work. They do more than 3 full stop at night. Do you get to log those, as dual given, and count the landings towards your currency?

I don't believe so. I was always under the impression that flight time could be logged, but landings for currency could not be logged.

[/ QUOTE ]Evan is correct. In order to count landings for currency, the pilot logging them must be the sole manipulator of the controls. FAR 61.57(b)

If you can convince the student to let you land the airplane three times (maybe a demonstration), you can count those.

Looks like I'll have to try and do some convincing when I get to be a CFI with students at night. Or just plunk down the $40 or so it would take to go out and do 3 full stops on my own.
