Not too interested in flying an airliner eventually either then eh? Ever take a look at a 777?
It's different to us, but these kinds of systems provide better situational awareness and allows us to make better decisions quicker than we normally would be able to by looking at multiple instruments that are strewn across your aircraft (I know I had to reach clear across a 172 to get to the DME in the plane I did my instrument rating in, that sucked). You won't be moving your head around as much so when you're in the soup you have less of a chance of getting disoriented.
I think it's great that we can get such advanced avionics into our aircraft so cheaply. I mean think about it, what do you think the basic six instruments in an airplane cost, plus a VOR reciver, plus a com radio, plus maybe another VOR and com radio if you like that kinda stuff. Then you gotta add a transponder, then if you like GPS that's another $10,000 at the least if you want an IFR approved model. Want some terrain avoidance? Get an MFD that'll cost you another $10,000 at the least.
Everything in one bang for ONLY $25,000 more is a WONDERFUL deal. I mean think about it, if you want the NAV II package as it stands right now then you're going to pay the same amount as this G1000 package and you'll only add an HSI and an MFD to put weather and stormscope info on.
The G1000 is a heck of a deal when you crunch the numbers. Sure it's additional training for us, but once we learn how to use it's going to benefit us in ways that only a few of us here that fly behind MFD's on a daily basis understand.
Cheers
