Heck, I love flying, I hate the distractions, I just like things to make sense too...
I'm not getting much work done today, lol...
I honestly am not arguing for bringing cell phones to open use.. I wanted to know the extent they disturb flight controls, if at all they do.Turn off your cellphone, bro!
It probably won't work above a few thousand feet and WILL NOT work at the flight levels.

Just to reiterate. On some aircraft, depending on where the cellular telephone is and what it's doing (ringing, recv'g text messages, whatever), it can interfere with radio communications in some circumstances. I've seen this.
I've heard a pilot or two talk about 'map shift' in some jets, but I haven't personally seen it happen.

I've heard interference in my headsets when a cell phone is on somewhere in the plane...but that's about it....like the other people, I don't really want to find out if it affects anything else in the plane.
As far as the FCC, I *think* the reg came about back in the days of the analog cell phones. If you were at 5 or 6 thousand feet with the old cell system, you'd tie up several towers with your call. 99.99% of cell systems now are digital, and therefore a little smarter and don't "tie up" towers like they used to. I'm sure someone with a little more technology sense can add to or correct that...........I do remember reading an article about the effects of cell phones in the air...this was around '95 or so.....

The Mythbusters had an episode on cell phones and planes. If I remeber right they couldn't find conclusive evidence of a cell phone doing much of anything to the nav equipment, but i dont know if they checked to see what it did with communications.

they did determine it caused interference on onler nav/comm equipment (which surprisingly to the average person if what most commercial planes have).
on the saab, i can always tell when someone is using a razr phone. makes a very distinct interference pattern over the interphone.

On their show, I think they had a smaller AC like a Hawker and only used one cell phone. Imagine a large airliner with a few hundred cell phones. There have been several studies by Airbus and others that have shown some adverse affects with phones, but it is hard to repeat the results.

The won't disturb the flight controls at all. They can and do disrupt communications to the point where you can't communicate, I have personally witness this.

I read an article a couple months back about this. Basicly their trying to make the A/C trick your phone into thinking there's a Cell tower in the A/C. And then that equipment would communicate with towers on the ground. They were trying to get the bugs worked out. Oh and I think the usage was going to cost a ton.

On Myth Busters, they did a test to see if a cell could cause problems. While they weren't able to duplicate it, they cited a situation overseas where cell phone interference did cause a fatal crash.
It's probably safe 999,999 out of a million times, but that one time where it does cause a problem could result in smoking metal and dead bodies.
Ain't nobody's cell call more important than that.
