Cathay Pacific

Is there, by chance, anyone who frequents this message board who flies for Cathay Pacific?

Thanks all.

Mike

I don't think so, but a good friend of mine is a 777 Captain for Cathay. What's your question(s). If I can't answer, I'm sure there are others here that can.

Well, I see their planes all the time on the ramp at ANC.....

Oh, I've got lots!!

I have an interview with CX for direct entry FO on the freighter fleet, so that would mean 747, either -200 or -400. The North American bases are ORD, JFK, LAX, and ANC. Do you fly both models or only one of them?

After three years you can go to HKG to fly the pax, but only on the 747? Or can you change aircraft?

If you don't want to go to HKG, and only want to fly the cargo, is that frowned upon?

How long to upgrade on the freighter fleet for a North American base?

How is the interview process?

Where the heck do you find a copy of Handling the Big Jets????

How do they decide if they want you for direct entry freight FO or pax SO?

How in depth is the medical?

What are some good things to study for the 1st phase interview?

Assuming (hoping, praying) the 1st phase goes well, what are some good things to study for the subsequent phases of the interview process?

There are lots more, I have to get them all written in one place.

Thanks, and tell your friend thanks also!!

Thanks for passing those questions on for me, I appreciate it. Yes, I am flying for ATA now. Not that you can call what I do flying; I sit reserve A in my house and fly about 4 days a month. Great crew utilization. Guess that is why 140 or so will be furloughed as of Feb 4.

Yes, I have been looking on flightinfo also. I am just more hesitant to post there as it is a topic that is often discussed, and you know how it is... "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION" if it is something that people feel has been discussed too much.

I have spoken to several people who did the interview.

Here's a basic rundown:

1. Know everything you can about the company- their routes, their fleet, management, etc. Know what kind of engines they use on their planes- this was asked to my friend.

2. Research Hong Kong/ China's history. This sounds weird, but they want to make sure you "know what you're getting yourself into." If you know nothing at all about HK, this will look bad on your part. For ex), they may ask "who is the president of our country?" "Why do you think you will fit in well in HK?" etc.

3. There are 2 important books that will help you out a lot- "Handling the Big Jets," and another book about the Cathay Interview process (I forget the name of the book, but both can be ordered off amazon.com or from aviationworld, in Canada).

4. You will be asked questions about aerodynamics, so know your stuff! ie) why do some of our planes have winglets, and others dont? what's the purpose of sweepback? What are vortex generators for? etc.

5. Cathay has put out a tv series (kind of like what SWA did with "Airline"). The show is called "Triumph in the skies." It is like a soap opera about life as a pilot, FA, etc at CX. If you can, research this show. From what I know, copies are only available in Mandarin/cantonese, but you can read about it on the net.

6. The interviewers will want to make sure your personality will fit in with Cathay's other people. They will observe you a lot- they will watch how you interact with other people and the interviewers. If you pass the first round of interviews, I believe they invite you to a cocktail dinner and party- this is still an interview!!! They will be watching you even though you don't know it. If you go, be on your guard at all times!

In any case, good luck. Be yourself during the interview, and always show enthusiasm towards joining "their team."

chris:

Thanks for the info. HTBJ should be here at the end of the week, and the other book to which you refer is, I believe, Preparing for Your Cathay Pacific Interview by Captains X, Y, and Z. That should be here end of the week also. I had to call Aviation World in YYZ to find reasonably priced copies of HTBJ. New ones here in the US go for around 200 dollars.

I am glad the interview is not for another 6 weeks as there is ALOT to study!!!
