Careflite flying circles

Hey folks,

I am just curious if anyone could shed some light.

Conditions:

11:43PM Central time
clear sky, unlimited visbo

KDTO is about 6 nmi west of my house. A careflighy heli is doing circles around my neighborhood. Flew around for maybe 15 minutes. I thought maybe he was doing a hold but the conditions were VMC. (and the only published hold is on the loc at the outer marker for 17 @ KDTO).

Why were they doing this??

How the heck are any of us supposed to know? :)

Auto accident near your house?

Functional Check Flight?

Checking out the neighborhood?

Nothing else to do?

:D

Around my neck of the woods they are just "county helicopters," whose primary purpose is HEMS, but it also is available to the sheriff's office if no transport is needed.

So they might have been looking for a guy trying to hide in a grassy field or found some folks hot-tubbin'. :)

My first 2 thoughts are - some programs allow agencies to dispatch the helicopter before they are certain they need it. This way the helicopter is in the air if they do decide to use it - it is called airborne stand by. http://www.airlifedenver.com/CustomPage.asp?guidCustomContentID=6CCEB4AE-0A79-4311-9140-35EE15F1D77D

Secondly - if the helicopter landed on the freeway they do not shut down, if it is quick they just leave the helicopter running on the ground, if it is going to be more lengthy they fly to another location, shut down and stand-by. It could have been a lengthy extraction and the helicopter was in the way - there might not have been the personal to land the aircraft elsewhere, or have a place close enough to land so they flew it for 15 minutes and waited to be called back.

I know this is a little late, but they were probably waiting to get into the hospital that is east of DTO.
